Safeway is Albertsons, Harris Teeter is Kroger as is Ralph’s. There’s not the competition you think there is because they operate under so many different names. Just in Southern California, Albertsons is Albertsons, Safeway, Vons and Pavilions that I can recall. Kroger is Harris Teeter, Ralph’s, Food4Less, Roundys, King Soopers, Frys, Ruler, Smiths, Fred Meyer and some others.
Yes.
Safeway is Vons etc…
And now Kroger will own both in addition to Ralph’s and others.
I am talking about other chains, eg 99 Market or Baja Ranch.
Aldi is great and is owned by the same corporation that owns Trader Joe’s.
Not everywhere has all these smaller chains, I know.
Here in Southern California I would never have to go to a Vons or Ralph’s if I didn’t want to.
I fondly remember stores like Alpha Beta and Lucky from my youth. They were also bought up by Albertsons or Ralph’s. Hughes Market was bought by Ralph’s.
I have a non-political problem with this. We don’t have Kroger near us. We had an Albertsons 20 miles out, but they were closed and replaced with a regional grocer that has bought up all the competition except also 20 mile away Wal-Mart and Aldi (which keeps raising their prices), unless I want to drive 30 - 50 miles for groceries. When one company owns all the stores in an area, you get sky high prices, because they have no competition. Some of the elderly, as well as the poor, can’t make the drive to find better prices, and are stuck spending much more than they can afford, or going without. Greed is a terrible thing.
“Here in the midwest Kroger is all union people and you get the typical “attitude” from many of them.”
Kroger is union nationwide I believe. I know those here in Virginia are. I’ve never had a bad experience and I shop Kroger every month. I think it has more to do with the attitude of people in a given area.
Ralph’s is also a Kroger entity.
Kroger already owns: Baker's, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co, Fred Meyer, Fry's, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, JayC, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano's, Metro Market, Pay Less, Pick 'n Save, QFC, Ralphs Ruler Foods and Smith's.
Albertson's owns, Acme Markets, Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico's, Balducci's, Carrs, Haggen, Jewel-Osco, Kings Food Markets, Lucky, Market Street, Pak 'n Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Safeway, Shaw's, Star Market,Tom Thumb, United Supermarkets, United Express and Vons.
Big anything is not a friend of personal liberty.
