Stroking a tiny spruce sapling, Swiss forest ranger Francois Villard fears the tree will not withstand global warming and live to a ripe old age like its ancestors.
The Risoud Forest, covering the border between France and Switzerland some 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) up in the Jura mountains, is filled with spruce trees which are hundreds of years old.
Their wood is perfect for crafting acoustic guitars, violins and other string instruments, making it sought after by luthiers around the world.
But climate change has brought drier, warmer weather, threatening the special tonal qualities of the wood.
"I have never seen so many dry trees," says Villard, who is now approaching retirement.
He is saddened by the sight of so many spruces turning red, losing their needles and drying up, and by spending his days marking trees for felling.
Spruces are the most common tree in Switzerland, and the hitherto stable climate in the Jura made the species perfect for producing tonewood for acoustic string instruments.

Wow. The incredible power of a few extra ppm of CO2. /s/
Climate Barf Alert
Stop the nonsense! Never heard of such trash in my life!!!!
If we were to assume that a warming climate is causing this, this is still a misleading article in a way. It’s understood that warming also has benefits. It increases crop yields in places that have cold winters. This also doesn’t address the critical question of how much warming is natural and not man made. It’s assumed that any warming is man made.
I am quite sure fine guitars can be crafted out hundreds of other woods…. Adapt and overcome.
The hills are alive...with the sound of whiners.
It’s all crap. My family has been growing timber for over 100 years. Our pines have survived fires, freezes and many hurricanes. We take out the larger trees so that the smaller ones will thrive and grow faster. We lost 9 acres due to a fire and within 10 years, the forest repopulated on it’s own.
Trees take in CO2 during the day. How is that harming them? It’s called photosynthesis.
Francois needs to stop smoking those magic mushrooms.
In a game where “appeals to authority” are the only argument that is used.... this lady has no background in this subject. None. She is a prolific contributor to dozens of news sites, multi-lingual, but doesn’t appear to have any background in either climate change nor music.
Was under the impression that in the most famous violins, the wood was significant because of its tight growth rings. If conditions are ideal for growth, tree rings will be wider.
Blah, blah, blah...
