One in four older teenagers in England are struggling with mental health problems, according to new figures that highlight the impact of the pandemic on the younger generation.
The data, published by NHS Digital, shows that 25.7% of 17 to 19-year-olds had probable mental health issues in 2022, compared to 17.4% (one in six) in 2021.
In 2017, the rate was 10.1% in that age group.
Among seven to 16-year-olds, 18.0% were found to have a probable mental health problems in 2022 - a rise of nearly six percentage points in the last five years.
"[The figures] are concerning and they are worrying", said Dr Tamsin Newlove-Delgado, a senior clinical lecturer in Child Public Mental Health at the University of Exeter.
She told Sky News: "What's particularly worrying is after the sharp rise we saw between 2017 and 2020, those high levels of mental health problems in children and young people haven't returned to pre-COVID levels.
"And secondly, we've even seen them increase, between 2021 and 2022.
"It's certainly clear that COVID has played a role and probably quite a significant one when you think about the disruption that children and young people have experienced to their social and their family situations as well as to their education."

I’d like to see a comparison of the mental illness rates of regular churchgoing teens compared to “nones”.
Well they now consider vaccine hesitancy a mental disorder.
Are they being driven crazy by leftism in Britain, normal teenage craziness being up-diag nosed to a mental illness, or is this full blown Soviet psychiatry where you are diagnosed as mentally ill if you question the government?

There’s the leftist “deconstruction” of all tradition and institutions, tyrannical lock-downs, fear-mongering over climate, oceans, racism, energy, war. Politics is infused into everything and public schools are becoming indoctrination centers
Language has become completely mutable, and children are told that even one’s birth-gender isn’t stable. the nuclear family support-network has collapsed.
Children crave certainty and discipline to make sense of the world. Our present society gives them none of that.
Perhaps we should be surprised its not a lot MORE than 1/4 of kids having mental issues.
When you have no purpose beyond yourself and hedonism, which is what the liberals have been pushing, you have nothing bigger than yourself to have faith in and too little to live and die for.
If world-wide weight standards were measured using Ethiopians, 98% of the world would be overweight.
PS That ain't far from the truth when you look at how BMI is calculated.
Why not do with them what England has done with so many previous generations of disturbed children? Given them electric guitars and record contracts.

On the other hand, the UK, having gone so neo-Soviet, is planning to declare them sick in order to disappear potential dissidents into the “mental health system.”

PUT them ALL to work on a serious hard job-—and let them find out what WORK really means.
COVID lockdowns and the media and government pushing “trans” social contagion are probably the big contributors.
Yes, leftists certainly enable teen craziness… but let us face the reality that a good 10 to 20 percent of all teenagers are mentally unbalanced in one way or another anyway. It’s because their brains and associated mental processes are just not completely formed. Without a doubt this is the reason the drinking age is still 21.
