Apache historian questions official narratives: ‘How is it possible that 120 soldiers cut off the feet of 8,000 of our brave Indigenous people?’
El Pais ^ | 26/11/22 | Vicente G. Olaya

Alfonso Borrego is the great-grandson of Geronimo, a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Apache people. Geronimo was known for his fearlessness – he resisted both the Mexican and American militaries when they attempted to remove his people from their tribal lands in the late-1800s.

Borrego, 66, has spent years researching what happened to his people and his great-grandfather. While speaking with EL PAÍS, he discusses the various conflicting narratives that have been pushed over the past century. Some say that the Spanish drove the Indigenous to near-extinction in the United States, while others suggest that the Anglo colonizers were far more cruel against civilian populations.

Born in El Paso, Texas, Borrego generally rejects the “official history” about the conquest that has been constructed by the United States.

“At school, they didn’t let us speak Spanish. They told us that the Spaniards were ‘the worst of the worst.’ But that doesn’t match my research.”

Borrego has also delved into the difficult final years of Geronimo, who surrendered to the American army in 1886 and, until his death in 1909, was “exhibited at fairs and parades by the gringos” in a humiliating fashion.

An engineer and historian by profession, Borrego has become a highly sought-after figure at history conferences in America and Europe.

“I’ve visited [Indigenous] reservations, I’ve met with the tribal chiefs, with Indigenous people, students… I’ve offered a contrast to what the textbooks say. There certainly was an Indigenous genocide, but while the Spaniards committed atrocities, the Anglos were the ones who carried it out,” he affirms in a conversation with EL PAÍS during his brief visit to Madrid.

Yes, Anglos did commit some horrific atrocities, as did the Conquistadors. But this is pure ignorance. News flash, Borrego. There are a paucity of Injuns (Native Americans, Indigenous peoples, whatever) East of the Mississippi for a simple reason. Andrew Jackson forcibly removed them to Oklahoma. It was called the Trail of Tears. Even so, there are a number of Indian reservations in New York State.

I don't know who chopped off 8,000 Native American feet in New Mexico. Have they found 8,000 footless skeletons there? Might it be that it was a fabrication? A decree by Juan de Onate that was never, or only partially, carried out? It's unlikely that it was all done at once, if it was done at all.

I’ll take a wild guess and say the native Indian population were always on the verge of near extinction before any White people even showed up.

Another re-writer of history, based on desire and non-sense.

How easy to ignore the massacres done by one's ancestors and blame everything on immigrants...

I’m getting a feeling that sometime this week there will be an announcement of a vacancy for a historian position.

Shaddup already. Didn’t we defeat these people? A bigger badder tribe showed up, THE END. I have always had a fascination with Plains Indians in particular, the Comanche, Kiowa, Sioux, Cheyenne, etc. due to their very impressive abilities as a light cavalry, however, I’ve never been under any delusions these tribes were anything but raping, murdering and pillaging cultures. Move on, figure out how to get your fat, alcoholic and diabetic people into a productive lifestyle. And remember, chief, ….not a white man alive killed an Indian.

He’s worse then that.

He’s a Mexican Supremacist masquerading as an Apache.

So one line of his ancestry is Injun. Big deal. The other lines are all Spaniard, and he’s bitter that the truth about them hasn’t been suppressed enough.

The Apaches were on this side of the border because of their hatred for Mexico. It wasnt blond, blue eyed Army officers who tied Mexican officers to the wheels of a buckboard and sent it off a cliff. Those were his alleged ancestors.

Lotta people in White River in total disagreement with this clown.

Apaches had Indian enemies. How did the Apaches treat the neighboring tribes?

What are Anglos?

By the "logic" of the left, illegal immigrants (before illegal immigrants were cool).

If 8,000 indigenous people did have their feet cut off during the modern era someone would have noted this in diaries, reports and something hideous as this would hardly have escaped public notice. These were probably ancient skeletons. We know the native peoples in the Americas had fierce intertribal warfare where cruelties of every kind occurred. The Aztecs, in particular, performed untold numbers of human sacrifices. Maybe this historian needs to look into this aspect of life in the Americas among the original inhabitants before conveniently pointing the finger at Spain and the US!

He’s a revisionist. A story teller. He is looking for fame and fortune, recognition and a payday. I may have as much Apache blood in my veins as he does, which according to 23 and me is 19% (Far more than the 1/2000th that Liz has) and have 25% Mexican. My ancestry traces back to the Mescalero Tribe. I really don’t care what happened 150 years ago. Today I am retired from a large corporation, and am still called back for consulting and rewarded well. I served in the US Army, and have an honorable discharge. I own 3 homes in California that are paid for. You determine your own future.

I don’t know the true stories of what happened in New Mexico and Arizona back then. But today anyone living here in the US can become successful and overcome. Or they can choose to play the victim role their entire lives and never achieve anything.

Actually, they had a nasty habit of siding with the losing side on white-on-white wars. In the French and Indian War, the French lost, and so did the Indians. In the Revolutionary War, the Americans won, and the British and their Indian allies lost. Likewise, the War of 1812. Then during the War Between the States, the transported Indians of Oklahoma, owning slaves, sided with the Confederacy. The result in all of these confrontation was p!ssed-off white people committing massacres of Indians. Sad, not justified, but a factual pattern.

We came, we took their land and subjugated them. It’s not a mystery of any sort... Sadly, they were easily subjugated because they were essentially stone aged people fighting against European’s with flintlock muskets, horses and swords... Three things the indigenous people of North America didn’t have when Columbus and other explorers arrived in North and South America.

They have been abused and mistreated for centuries... That’s they way it goes... Just ask the Irish, Scottish and other communities that were subjugated by the British. You just need to suck it up and get over it.

Google Juan de Onate, the governor or something of New Mexico, who ordered the mass amputations. Also see my comment at the start of this thread.
