Taiwan president quits as party head after China threat bet fails to win votes

aiwan President Tsai Ing-wen resigned as head of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Saturday after her strategy to frame local elections as showing defiance to China's rising bellicosity failed to pay off and win public support.

The elections for mayors, county chiefs and local councillors are ostensibly about domestic issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic and crime, and those elected will not have a direct say on China policy.

But Tsai had recast the election as being more than a local vote, saying the world is watching how Taiwan defends its democracy amid military tensions with China, which claims the island as its territory.

Yeah he’s running for the hills he knows China is about to invade Taiwan! He knows the US doesn’t hold a candle to the powerful China military. He is no fool.

I believe that when the time comes we will find out Taiwan has myriad of fifth column Communists who will give everything over without a fight.

They will have help from within the United States.

The inspector general asked the Trump administration's Justice Department in December 2020 to consider a criminal investigation into Chao, but the DOJ refused.[66] Ethics experts said the appearances raised ethical concerns, as public officials are prohibited from using their office to profit others or themselves.[65] Federal disclosures cited by The New York Times revealed a gift to Chao and her husband Mitch McConnell from Chao's businessman father James, valued between $5 million and $25 million.[67] The company her father founded (and which her sister, Angela, currently runs), The Foremost Group, has extensive ties to the Chinese state and Chinese elites.[67] It obtained hundreds of millions of dollars worth of loans from a bank owned by the Chinese state, has substantial interests tied to a major shipyard funded by and long-term contracts with a steel producer owned by the Chinese state. In what The Times described as "a rarity for foreigners", Angela and James Chao have served on the boards of a Chinese state-owned shipbuilder, and Angela has been on the board of the Bank of China, as well as the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (which was created by the government of China).[67]

The Butchers of Beijing would be smart to try to absorb Taiwan rather than invade. They can absorb by planting sympathetic agents in as many places as possible...including national, regional and local legislatures.

Of course they have already done that decades ago.

The sleepers have awakened.

Chiang Kai-shek’s great-grandson won election for Taipei Mayor, for KMT Party. Youngest Taipei mayor ever - 36 years old

Local elections. Fairly meaningless.

Party chair always resigns after a loss.

Unless I'm mistaken a good percentage of citizens of Taiwan have family in Red China...and that could cause such a person to feel the need to read Chinese papers. It could also mean that the person loves Red China...or fears it.

Fear would be a very reasonable frame of mind for Taiwan's population...particularly now.

It would be interesting to see some polling on attitudes towards reunification. Wonder what the split and the trend line looks like.

Does the KMT do ballot harvesting?

No ballot harvesting. Must vote in person and show ID

Do they use Dominion voting machines?

No machines. Countting is done at the polling location right after the polls are closed. It is open to the public. Each vote is read aloud, turned for the public to see (cameras and video allowed ) and shown to reps from the parties before tallied.

This is interesting. Anyone here with internal knowledge?…

Most of these races had nothing to do with China. It was on local issues. For example, the mayor of Taipei. Most of the people were pissed about a renovation of the baseball stadium. For the amount of money they spent on it,they could have built a new one. Instead they redid the old one and did an awful job. The seats have no leg room and the seats behind homeplate have a wall in front of it that unless you are over 6 feet tall, you cant see over it. The field is astroturf and has so many bumps on it, it is like playing on concrete. The star player tripped at the beginning of the season and was out because of injury for the rest of the year. The local party government would not admit they did anything wrong and still claim they did a good job. In another race, their candidate was accused of plagerism on his masters thesis. He denied it, the party backed him, and when people looked into it, the thesis he copied from had the exact spelling errors.
