Nato expansion was driven from below, by the people of Russia’s “near abroad”. Putin just reinforced their fears about Russia. That’s why Sweden and Finland are now joining Nato. Now a once moribund Nato is rearming, everyone’s defense budgets are increasing. Ex - Poland will soon have 1000+ South Korean tanks.
It takes great skill to so effectively energize and unify ones potential enemies. Putin has done a masterful job here.
Everyone in Europe (OK, 70-80%) hates Russia. Such unanimity is rare. It’s a real achievement.
