Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry condemns Hungarian PM’s ‘Greater Hungary’ scarf
Romania Insider ^ | 22 November 2022 | Radu Dumitrescu

The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement expressing its disapproval after Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban wore a scarf featuring a map of "Greater Hungary" during a match between Hungary and Greece. The map included a piece of Transylvania within Hungarian borders.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry conveyed its “firm disapproval” of Orban’s gesture to the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest, noting that the PM’s “attitude is in contrast with the atmosphere of openness that defined the relaunching of bilateral dialogue” between Romania and Hungary.

“Any revisionist manifestation, regardless of the form it takes, is unacceptable, contrary to the current realities and the commitments undertaken jointly by Romania and Hungary to build a bilateral relationship within the defining parameters of the basic instrument that governs the bilateral relationship, namely the Treaty on the understanding, cooperation and good neighborliness between Romania and the Republic of Hungary, signed in Timișoara on September 16, 1996,” the ministry added in a press release cited by G4Media.

Hungarian government officials have been using the map of “Greater Hungary” consistently for several years. In June 2019, Romania and Slovenia condemned the publication of a map representing "Greater Hungary" from which the neighboring states each "tear off" a piece, Romania being represented as taking Transylvania. The map was published on the website abouthungary.hu, managed by prime minister Viktor Orban's office.

In December of the same year, Orban chaired a FIDESZ meeting with the map of Greater Hungary in the background. The map showed Hungary as including pieces of present-day Croatia. In reply, Croatian PM Andrej Plenković said that the map was “a challenge.” At the end of April 2020, a Hungarian minister gave an interview with the BBC with the same map in the background, according to G4Media.

and the Greater Hungaria map - this is based on when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg empire

This historical territory included large parts of modern Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Slovakia – which were all lost under the Treaty of Trianon of 1920 following the collapse of the joint Austro-Hungarian state.

Orban forgets that while the land was theoretically the "Hungarian half of the Hapsburg empire" it was still demographically different

And since Slovakia, Hungary and Austria are part of Schengen - the people can travel, work and live in those areas - whether Magyar or Slovak etc

The United States of Greater Austria (German: Vereinigte Staaten von Groß-Österreich) was an unrealized proposal made in 1906 to federalize Austria-Hungary to help resolve widespread ethnic and nationalist tensions. It was conceived by a group of scholars surrounding Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, notably by the ethnic Romanian lawyer and politician Aurel Popovici.

Franz Ferdinand had planned to redraw the map of Austria-Hungary radically, creating a number of ethnically and linguistically dominated semi-autonomous “states” which would all be part of a larger federation renamed the United States of Greater Austria. Under this plan, language and cultural identification was encouraged, and the disproportionate balance of power would be corrected. The idea was set to encounter heavy opposition from the Hungarian part of the Dual Monarchy, since a direct result of the reform would have been a significant territorial loss for Hungary.

However, the Archduke was assassinated at Sarajevo in 1914, triggering the outbreak of the First World War.

After World War I, Hungary was punished far more than Austria.
Germany was left in ruins.

This led to the rise of Hitler while Hungary did not go fascist. In fact, Hungary wanted to align with the UK.

Unfortunately, Hungary was caught between the NAZIs to the west and the communists to the east with both groups having control over Hungary at one time.

After WW II, Hungary was left in the hands of the communists until the 1990s.

So, the Hungarian people feel that they have been crapped on by east and west for the past 100 years.

Hungarian populist politicians embraced the American race hustler’s marxist grievance theories and are applying these to their whole nation.

What we see now is that this “School of Resentment” doesn’t work when applied to the whole society.

Hungary is losing and falling behind its peers while having more and more people falsely blaming the designated scapegoats for their misery.

Hungary was the part of the “Dual Monarchy” given nominal ownership of the bulk of the Austro-Hungarian empire. This was done for good political reasons as they were in the 19th century, in that Hungary needed to be given reasons not to split, as they nearly did in 1848-49.

A lot of Imperial policy in the 19th-early 20th century was about keeping Hungary happy.

Hence when the Empire broke apart Hungary “lost” what it only nominally held. The process of splitting, in 1918-19, was a matter of local initiatives (or one can say anarchy) in those parts. Neither the Empire nor Hungary attempted to hold on to any of it, as their armies had melted away. The treaty makers imposed nothing on Hungary, it was just a matter of recognizing what had happened on the ground after the armies dissolved.

To put the offense in perspective, remember this ad?

Imagine the President of Mexico, wearing that on a jacket or t-shirt.

That is the level of Orban's stupidity.

Fascinating time-lapse video of ever-changing European national boundaries over the past thousand years.

It’s very easy to find Hungary and Russia. It’s very hard to find The Ukraine (meaning borderland or frontier) before 1991, with the breakup of the USSR.

The difference is that Mexico never controlled that territory, any more than France controlled what became The Louisiana Purchase. Those borders were drawn on paper out of pure fantasy, and were therefore also give up with the stroke of a pen by diplomats and kings.

On the other hand, Hungary and the various manifestations of the Hungarian Empire existed throughout history. Watch the amazing time lapse video above.

Hungary got royally screwed over at the end of WWI by the Trianon Treaty. Yes, there were certainly plenty of “subject nationalities” as they were called, in the Hungarian administered half of the Austro-Hungarian empire. So no, a fair rendering of the borders would not include those groups in a Hungarian state. That said, had borders been drawn along ethnographic lines, Hungary would be a lot larger than it is today.

Transylvania (Erdely) in particular had over 1.5 million ethnic Hungarians which was the largest subject nationality group in Europe after WWII. Though parts of Slovakia and Ukraine were also majority Hungarian. For cultural and historical reasons though, Transylvania has always been more important to Hungarian self identity than the other regions given away by the victorious Entente Powers after WWI.

Remember, that these are the same idiots who created Yugoslavia, put 3 million ethnic Germans in a newly created Czechoslovak state and millions more in Poland and millions more in France - creating problems that led directly to WWII, the ethnic cleansing of 15 million ethnic Germans as well as the deaths of at least 1-2 million of them after WWII, as well as the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.

[Hungarian] Govt slams EU Court ruling
https://thehungaryjournal.wordpress.com/2022/02/16/govt-slams-eu-court-ruling/

EXCERPT:

According to Justice Minister Judit Varga, the Court delivered “a politically motivated judgment because of the [Hungarian] Child Protection Act”. “The decision is living proof that Brussels is abusing its power. This is another pressure against our country only because we adopted our law on child protection last summer [2021]. Brussels cannot let the Hungarian people have their say in a referendum. The bureaucratic elite does not want to accept the free choice and opinion of the Hungarian people”, she wrote on Facebook.

The EU Court of Justice today made a political decision based on Hungary’s Child Protection Act
https://abouthungary.hu/blog/the-eu-court-of-justice-today-made-a-political-decision-based-on-hungarys-child-protection-act

This morning, the European Court of Justice handed down its final verdict on the case brought in front of the court by Hungary and Poland on the European Union tying fund transfers to something they call “rule of law” in Brussels-speak.

The so-called rule of law or conditionality mechanism would see money withheld if a member state does not respect the bloc’s core values. Or at least so they say.

Sadly, we know very well that this rule-of-law argument is just a façade. The ECJ’s decision is, in fact, an attack against Hungary’s child protection legislation, which is aimed at keeping LGBTQ activists out of schools, protecting Hungarian children from propaganda in sex education, and ensuring that decisions regarding their children’s upbringing remain the sole right of parents.

[Victor] Orban: We should go forward not backward
https://thehungaryjournal.wordpress.com/2022/03/31/orban-we-should-go-forward-not-backward/

EXCERPTS:

Regarding last week’s [March 2022] NATO and EU summits, Orban said at these meetings he saw something he had never seen before: strategic alternatives competed with each other. Evidently, a country group came into being which would like NATO to become involved in this conflict as much as possible, and rather than seeing a Ukraine-Russia war, they see Russian aggression at this time against Ukraine, but later against NATO’s world, and they believe that involvement in this war is inevitable.

The second position is ours; according to this, NATO should not send weapons and soldiers to this conflict. “Our position is the majority position at present, and therefore NATO decided not to take part in this military conflict: it will not send soldiers, it will not send weapons,” the prime minister said.

The prime minister said if the Left won the Sunday elections, weapons shipments to Ukraine would start immediately, all deadly weapons would be allowed through the territory of Hungary, and all weapons not currently used by Hungary that are fit for use in an armed conflict would be placed at Ukraine’s disposal with immediate effect. Hungary would join the group that is urging NATO’s intervention in this conflict. Therefore, what is at stake in the upcoming elections is peace or war, he said, highlighting that the Left poses a serious threat to peace, while Fidesz is the guarantee of peace.

Analysing the economic situation, he said there is an artificial price boosting policy in the West, and meanwhile inflation has struck. Fifty per cent of inflation arises from energy price rises, Brussels’ flawed energy policy. Additionally, we now have the war, and they decided to impose sanctions.

“We never agreed with them, but in the interest of unity, we never prevented them,” he said, also mentioning that the plan of swift detachment from cheap Russian energy carriers has further boosted inflation.

Why do you say that Hungary was punished more than Austria?

Not saying you're wrong, but opening this for a sharing of thoughts.

My thoughts are that what the Hungarians see as unfair, the Romanians or Slovaks might consider the fairest deal of them all. The forceful Magyarization of the land meant that every nationality living there felt threatened by Hungarian nationalism. When these countries (such as Romania, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia) realised they were given an opportunity to reverse centuries of oppression from the Hungarians – they took the opportunity without question. In fact, the final Treaty of Trianon actually gave Hungary some lands that Yugoslavia and Romania wanted for themselves such as the Hungarian-Romanian border at the river Tisza or the Yugoslav occupation of Pecs.

The ultimate borders kept majority Magyar areas within Hungary - the other lands were not populated by any significant number of Hungarians EXCEPT for Szekelyland --> and yes, that should have been part of Hungary, but it's a Hungarian island in the middle of a Romanian sea

That's kind of like why Lwów/L'viv was a Polish island in a Ukrainian sea

But like I said, I'd like to hear your point of view

Yes, I know a good many Hungarians and some of them expressed that view.

I agree more with those who say "within the EU we should push for more acceptance and joint nationality for Hungarians in Slovakia and Romania just like in Sud Tyrol

I think Hungarians need to see how far their country has improved in the past 30 years

Their GDP per capita is rising - still a way to go yes.

Also, it is difficult when you are a Hungarian and you read about the exploits of the Magyars 1100 years ago, but then realize that today you are a small country of 10 million people. Kind of like the Mongols today - but both need to realize that the days of the great steppe riders is gone - dead for centuries.

Hungary has a lot going for it and they should celebrate what they are, rather than living in the glories of the past (and so too should the Poles - though I think they are doing that quite well
