Ukraine - Lights Out, No Water And Soon No Heat

Earlier today the Russian military shut down the Ukrainian electricity network.

Previous attacks had limited the distribution capacity to some 50% of demand. Controlled blackouts over several hours per day allowed to give some electricity for a few hours to most parts of the country. The attack today created a much larger problem. Not only were distribution networks attacked but also so the elements that connect Ukraine's electricity production facilities to the distribution network. All four nuclear power stations of Ukraine with their 15 reactors are now in shutdown mode.

Kiev along with most other cities of Ukraine no longer has electricity.

Moldavia is likewise effected as it received some 20% of its electricity from Ukraine. When the Ukrainian network shut down the only local thermal power plant shut down too. It is likely that it can be switched on again but that can be a complicate process.

Limited electricity imports from the European system into Ukraine may still be possible but that electricity would only be available in Ukraine's western cities.

Before today's attack the Washington Post reported of the difficulties in repairing the network. As we ad explained before the Russian attacks are hitting the transformers that connect the national 330 kilovolt backbone network. These are hard to replace:

Do you realize how dumb it is to try to excuse the bad actions of one nation by claiming other nations do similar things?

If the US bombing some foreign country in the past was an act of terrorism then Russia doing it right now is an act of terrorism, and it is worse because the world is supposed to be progressing.

If as you say the US efforts in other nations were bad, then Russia's actions today are worse.

Their product was fuel oil for New England.

So what? Sounds like it might be a dumb EPA policy. But we have plenty of fuel oil in New England.

I didn’t excuse any actions, by the US or any other country.

Bombing in war by belligerents is not terrorism.

War is not a moral, or amoral enterprise, either way.

YOU ascribed a moral dimension to these events. I just put you in that logic box (if...then) to show hypocrisy.

I subscribe to the “might makes right” foreign policy of Realpolitik.

Thanks to our Freedom-Spawning Bombs all those places are now prosperous Jeffersonian republics and strong allies to America! And special thanks to China for highlighting the unbroken string of American foreign policy successes!

Do you have a time stamp for those pictures? No, but I didn't see one on your friend's photo either.

In fact...which image would you guess is easier to misrepresent, a normal lights on night time image outside an apartment in Kiev or several city wide blackout images from various angles/sources?

-btw ABC News reported blackout conditions in Kiev last night...are they now part of the Russian propaganda effort?

Look at his tweet again. He says “now”. He posted it 20 hours ago. As of 5 hours ago, only 25% of the city is still without power.

It’s absolutely incredible that 9 months after invading a much smaller neighbor, After losing 10s of thousands of its own troops and thousands of its best military vehicles, Russia is currently retreating from territory it gained and is only able to impact Kiev with long range missile strikes. They’ve essentially fallen into the same failed strategy that Hitler resorted to toward the end of WW2. Try to terrorize your opponent’s civilian population by lobbing missiles into cities with the hope they’ll hit something significant. It will work the same as it did for Hitler. It simply cements the resolve of your opponent as they realize their enemy has no good intent for them and won’t go away until they are defeated. At this rate, Russia will end this debacle with a badly depleted military and the lose of Crimea. Brilliant strategy.

I subscribe to the “might makes right” foreign policy of Realpolitik.

So you should welcome NATO and the USA sending in to Ukraine whatever arms it takes to crush Russia. That will save NATO and US taxpayers billions of dollars in the future.

By your logic we should send Ukraine a few dozen atomic warheads and ballistic missiles so they can finish off Russia if necessary.

You aren’t keeping up very well. In the last 24 hours Ukraine has restored water and electrical power to almost all of Kiev. Three of its four nuclear power plants are on line and supplying the national grid. Power has been restored to at least 50% of the country by Thursday evening with repairs progressing rapidly.
So basically 24 hours after Russia launched a massive missile attack (it can’t use aircraft because it has lost too many) on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, Ukraine is well on its way to repairing what was damaged. Meanwhile, the Russian military continues to get pushed out of all its gains on the ground. It is now establishing defensive lines in Crimea fully anticipating Ukraine will move into the peninsula. You’ll call it more “strategic retreating”. The rest of the world will marvel at the ineptitude of the Russian military. After 9 months Russia still doesn’t control airspace over Ukraine. It had to call up 300,000 reserves to replace the massive loses it has taken, and it still is losing territory every day. It’s an epic failure of historic magnitude. The only real question is how long it takes before Putin “unexpectedly” passes away. Won’t be long now. Russians don’t tolerate leaders who lose.
