Two million British workers face the prospect of paying 60 per cent of their income to the government in taxes as a result of the latest round of hikes by the supposedly conservative government which is also splashing out billions more on state employees’ pensions.
This week, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, an anti-Brexit holdover from the David Cameron era who played the pivotal role in ousting Liz Truss and installing Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister, announced that he would be increasing taxes by another £24 billion, taking the tax burden to its highest level since the Second World War.

The UK is suffering from what I’ll call the Roman Empire disease. The Romans got to the point where they felt that their empire just couldn’t fall. It was impossible! So there was need to take any corrective measures. And we all know how that turned out.
The US is infected with that same disease, by the way.
Side point: I wish I could say I came up with that theory all in my own. But it actually came from an article on the Roman Empire I read years ago.
In Colorado, State employees can retire at 50 at 90% of their salary.
And at least for a time, they could "buy" more equivalent years of service.
So, they take a private sector job at equal or higher pay and spend the next 15 years raking in twice their prior gross income.....

Actually it was Newt Gingrich who called Bob Dole “the tax collector for the welfare state.” Dole was a real cross-the-aisle type republican who never missed a chance to help.

The article talks as if only the two million higher earners will be paying 60% tax. Truth is, nearly all workers already pay more than that:
Employer National Insurance rate: 13.8%
Employee’s National Insurance rate: 12.00%
Income Tax Basic Rate: 20%
Value Added Tax on what’s left in your pocket on what you buy to keep alive (most things except food and some energy): 20%

Thanks, for the clarification - I would hate to give Dole undue credit.
Regardless of who said it, unfortunately that is the way it seems to work out. Just try fixing the “Ag Dept.” budget to rein in food stamps and give-away programs, or try to mildly adjust Social Security or more importantly SSI payments, and listen to the howls fdom the socialists and the media.
Government have been screwing their own people over for hundreds of years...
But there’s always enough for third world invaders because “diversity is our greatest strength”.
Imagine it’s Monday, 6:00 a.m., cold, rainy, cloudy, dreary and you wake up in London, England.
Your electric bill came in the mail Friday and is .40 cents per square foot (about $600.00).
And you remind yourself, as your feet hit the floor, that this
day your work ALL DAY (Monday) will be taken by the government and given to some bum who won’t work. Same thing Tuesday. Same thing Wednesday.
Finally, you get to Thursday but realize that that days must be dedicated to paying the electric bill.
So, finally, Friday you get to work for yourself but that is the day you go to the grocery store.
