LATAM Airlines plane crashes on Peruvian runway, two firefighters dead

LIMA, Nov 18 (Reuters) - A LATAM Airlines (LTM.SN) jet collided with a firetruck on the runway as it was taking off from the airport in Peru's capital Lima on Friday, resulting in the death of two firefighters, the carrier said.
Peru's health ministry said at 7 p.m. (0000 GMT) that 20 passengers were being treated in a clinic, and at least two were in serious condition. The airline said no passengers or crew members were killed.
The ministry said 61 people had been moved to nearby clinics and hospitals from Jorge Chavez International Airport. It was not clear whether this was due to injury or precaution.

To which I’d add: Why the hell didn’t they see one another a mile away?

I suspect the pilots were focused on the runway, skies, and controls. It’s not reasonable to anticipate a fire truck is going to turn into your path.
The fault is entirely with the truck crew, it doesn’t appear they even slowed down before making the turn. Even if someone directed them to take that route by mistake, they had the responsibility to stop and ensure no aircraft were on the runway.
RIP, but the fault is thiers.
Support equipment is required to ask the tower for clearance to enter on an active runway...at least in the USA. Looking “both ways” is always a good idea for the support equipment. Just like a prudent car driver checks both ways before entering an intersection after a light turns green.

.. It will be interesting to see what happens with the crash analysis. The Lima Peru International Airport is a simple layout. It has one lengthy runway and a taxiway to handle the heaviest of aircraft. How this crash happened will eventually come out..
