Wait a minute here. Members of the House are elected by the people. If Nancy was in the Senate when she left the governor of the state she represents can pick the replacement. Since she is in the House, the governor can not pick someone. There must be a special election.

The article left me confused about this, too. What it meant was, Pelosi could resign as Speaker now, and another Democrat would be appointed to be the Speaker to lead a dynamic lame-duck attack on constitutional government until the new Congress takes over on January 3.
