Iran says it has developed a hypersonic missile

Iran says it has developed a hypersonic ballistic missile that is capable of penetrating an enemy nation’s anti-missile system.

On Thursday, Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told reporters the hypersonic system is a “great generational leap” in the development of missile technology.

“I don’t think any technology would be found for 10 years capable of countering it,” Gen. Hajizadeh said, according to Iran’s official FARS news agency.

A hypersonic missile can fly more than five times the speed of sound and at lower altitudes than conventional missiles. They are also maneuverable, making them harder to track for air defense units.

Hypervelocity is pretty much Hyperbole.

For the cost of a mach 6 or 8 missile you can build about a thousand or more conventional missiles that would overwhelm any defense.

Or North Korea. They developed their own hyper-sonic missiles not long ago. Not sure how good they are, though.

What this means, which people don’t understand is that US power projection is dead...unless they have troops on the ground already; any engagement with Russia, China and now Iran will render the sea fleet neutralized in a matter of weeks or severely degraded.

Ask Raytheon why do they sell to the government the grenade launchers which cost $200k but kill their operators but not enemy tanks.
With such a lucrative business why care about hightech missiles? It is too much of work!

Not true. They aren’t that expensive. There are no countermeasures on top of that.

it would destabilize the international security regime if we were to respond to new weapons development by developing the same system ourselves. It would send a signal that our arms control experts have failed.

Russian version is basically an intermediate range ballistic missile converted for air launch and level flight. I bet half a million max. Iranian is likely a licensed version.

Hypervelocity is Mach 5+.

The most sophisticated after boost phase re-enter and bounce off the atmosphere until they reach their target mach 8-9 or better. Standard missiles are incapable of that.

Kind of like the rail guns which were touted for so long. They were scrapped because all the friction burned the barrels up.
