U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, the only pro-life Democrat in the U.S. House, won re-election Tuesday after narrowly fending off a pro-abortion challenger in the primary.
The Texas Tribune reports Cuellar defeated his pro-life Republican challenger, Cassy Garcia, in the 28th District in South Texas with 57 percent of the vote.
In September, he was the lone Democrat who voted against a radical pro-abortion bill that would force states to legalize abortions for basically any reason up to birth and force taxpayers to fund them. Cuellar also supports the Hyde Amendment, which bans taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs.
On the campaign trail, he criticized his own party leaders for their “far left” policies on abortion and immigration, saying they do not “understand reality,” the Tribune reports.
In response to his victory this week, the pro-life Democrat promised to represent his district well, including by supporting religious organizations that provide after-school programs for students and expanding medical care, according to the report.
“In Webb County, my neighbors have talked to me about the importance of improving health care; supporting quality education for our students and teachers in our public schools and higher education; fighting for the resources our local, state and federal law enforcement need to keep our communities safe and securing the border; lowering costs for working families; creating jobs; and keeping taxes low,” Cuellar told the Laredo Morning Times. “As a born-and-raised resident of Laredo, your concerns are my concerns.”
Over the summer, Cuellar also won a tough primary election against a pro-abortion Democrat challenger Jessica Cisneros. Pro-abortion groups spent massive amounts of money to support Cisneros, but her pro-abortion views did not resonate with voters in the moderate Texas congressional district.
Texas is one of more than a dozen states that protects unborn babies by banning abortions. New research estimates up to 10,000 unborn babies already have been saved from abortion since these laws went into effect this summer, and hundreds of thousands more are expected to be saved from death in the coming years.
Polls consistently show a strong majority of Americans support legal protections for unborn babies, especially after the first trimester or once their heartbeat is detectable.
*grabs heart* DID YOU HEAR THAT ELIZABETH!? I'M COMING TO JOIN YOU, IT'S THE BIG ONE!!!
I thought demonrats didn’t want pro lifers in their party.
Wonder why he’s a Dim
There’s such a thing as a pro-life democrat?
They don’t but every now and then there are pro lifers on that side.
Looks like Maya Flores didn’t make the cut as a republican in South Texas. How do you win the special election and then lose in the general? I guess it was the out.
Turn out.
That’s one advantage the Democrats have over us. They know how to win. Once the primary is settled they coalesce behind their candidate no matter what. We are different. There are many who get butthurt when their candidate loses and stay home. Then there are those who actively try to discourage people from voting for a candidate because they are not pure enough.
A pro-life democrat in a pro-death party.
I still don’t think abortion is the lightening bolt issue
some folks are desperate to see it being.
A person can not be a pro-life democrat. The democrats are pro-death on all fronts.
The stench of Henry B. Gonzales continues.
