Twitter Inc's new CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday the social media platform's mission was to become the most accurate source of information about the world, sparking debate about how it would achieve that and who determines what is accurate.
A flurry of drastic measures including sacking half the staff and charging users that Musk has taken since he took over Twitter in a $44 billion deal just about a week ago has provided some early clues to how the platform will be reshaped by the world's richest person.
Some advertisers have pulled spending since the deal was announced, with Musk blaming activist groups for pressuring advertisers amid concerns about its content moderation.
"Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission," Musk said on Sunday.
His tweet instantly triggered tens of thousands replies and provoked lively debates on how the mission will be achieved.
"Accurate to who?," Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.
Musk, who also runs electric vehicle company Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX, said last month Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with "widely diverse viewpoints".

The only way to be accurate is to permit free unfiltered speech.
He is tanking Twitter and his 44 bills.
I don’t get it. But then I don’t get New Jersey.
(That was a cheap shot.)
Free speech means the right to say things that a majority disagrees with. If he blocked those opinions, he’d be as disgusting as the last iteration of Twitter.
Free speech does NOT include the right to encourage illegal actions. So I would expect Musk to NOT have a pedophile on a moderation counsel, but WOULD expect him to have members of the L-alphabet groups, as well as people of political opinions to both the left and right. That means far left and far right, not just the establishment middle. So you can’t get away with having an AOC supporter without having a Trump supporter.
The perfect moderation counsel, in my opinion, would require that blocking content would require unanimous consent. Put the right group of conflicting opinions together, and no one would get blocked except the ones adjudicating for illegalities.
If there were only one Trump supporter on the council, he or she would probably be continually casting the sole “no” vote that saves nonconformists of the stripes I described from Twitter oblivion.
There should be at least two unquestionable MAGA Trump supporters on the council, the idea being that no one person gets so much grief from the psychotic woke shock troops surrounding them that they are driven out of the council on a rail, or forced to quit to save their sanity or protect themselves or their family.
