Musk lays out Twitter mission, sparks debate on content accuracy

Twitter Inc's new CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday the social media platform's mission was to become the most accurate source of information about the world, sparking debate about how it would achieve that and who determines what is accurate.

A flurry of drastic measures including sacking half the staff and charging users that Musk has taken since he took over Twitter in a $44 billion deal just about a week ago has provided some early clues to how the platform will be reshaped by the world's richest person.

Some advertisers have pulled spending since the deal was announced, with Musk blaming activist groups for pressuring advertisers amid concerns about its content moderation.

"Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission," Musk said on Sunday.

His tweet instantly triggered tens of thousands replies and provoked lively debates on how the mission will be achieved.

"Accurate to who?," Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.

Musk, who also runs electric vehicle company Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX, said last month Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with "widely diverse viewpoints".

"Accurate to who?"

Facts are not relative. They are not one thing to cross-dressing liberal crybabies and another to conservatives. They don't become more or less true the more you shut out opposing voices. Up will always be up and down will always be down.

Here's a comment which goes to the heart of the issue of bringing news "accuracy" to Twitter:
"Accurate to who?," Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.
From the Left's POV, all news that doesn't come from the Left is hate speech. Case in point, I made a comment on Twitter over the weekend that free speech is important and powerful...and necessary for a clear perception of and connection to reality itself (knowing full-well that it would rankle Lefties).

I got back exactly what I expected.

Most retorts were along the lines of "we already have free speech, we just don't permit "hate speech." Those Lefties honestly believe that any opinions that differ from theirs is "hate speech." I suggested to one commenter that when politics infects all discourse, it blinds people to any unbiased points of view.

He/she immediately blocked me, calling me irredeemable.

“...widely diverse viewpoints.”

__________

The implication is that this council will tolerate individuals who are: masculine/non-homosexualist, non-woke/anti-virtue signaling, non-modernist religious (authentic Catholic), culturally and morally conservative (countercultural), anti-propaganda/true antifascist, and 100% supportive of our country while only supporting our country’s government when it deserves it.

He’s going to require something like the Marshall plan to pull this off.

Where politics predominates and renders final judgment after stultifying final judgment, free speech withers and the truth becomes irrelevant. That is what Twitter has become.

Yup. You hit the nail on the head.

The Left is literally hypnotized into believing that any opinions that don't agree with their take on reality are inaccurate.

This "echo chamber" effect isn't just a throwaway line...this a real and at the heart of the Left's very real insanity.

They are like patients at an asylum who don't want to go outside into the sunlight. They are metaphorical vampires in their desperate revulsion to sunlight (and reality).

I don't think so (tho you may be correct).

I think he is going to permit a free-for-all of ideas and comments without regard to political orientation.

What Musk’s takeover of Twitter has revealed is that the Lefties are like people on a very isolated island who, having no contact with outsiders, have lost touch with reality itself.

“Accurate to who?,” Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.

That’s always been the question Jack. It sure as hell wasn’t accurate before.

Google/Youtube and Facebook aren’t remotely accurate either.

Exactly. Accurate is not a subjective term.

Accurate is accurate to everyone.

You Twitter people must know which ads are missing? Post them and let the boycott begin.

The scary thing is that Jack and millions like him actually believe that information that differs from their view of reality is "inaccurate."

This isn't just a political problem, this is a problem for our culture and society as a whole.

When 30% of the population (that's the estimate, tho it may be incorrect) has gone bad guano crazy, the country has a serious problem.

I think that all of the ‘news’ sources should be flagged that way I can block them all at one time.

Exactly. Accurate is not a subjective term.

Accurate is accurate to everyone.

There is very little which is "accurate" to everyone.

Science has its limits. A great deal of what is "known" is debatable.

Allowing the debate is what is best for us to get a closer approximation of reality.

Examples:

Was 911 an inside job? Many believe the planes themself could not bring down the towers.

Is homosexuality a learned behavior or genetically intrinsic?

Are there statistical racial differences in intelligence?

Does more gun ownership increase or decrease murder or suicide rates?

Is a .45 ACP a better "stopper" than a .357 magnum?

Did anyone benefit from slavery? Were those benefits passed on to future generations?

Is more CO2 in the atmosphere good or bad or with little effect?
