Kyiv prepares for a winter with no heat, water or power

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The mayor of Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, is warning residents that they must prepare for the worst this winter if Russia keeps striking the country's energy infrastructure — and that means having no electricity, water or heat in the freezing cold cannot be ruled out.

“We are doing everything to avoid this. But let’s be frank, our enemies are doing everything for the city to be without heat, without electricity, without water supply, in general, so we all die. And the future of the country and the future of each of us depends on how prepared we are for different situations," Mayor Vitali Klitschko told state media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address to the nation Sunday that about 4.5 million people were without electricity. He called on Ukrainians to endure the hardships and “we must get through this winter and be even stronger in the spring than now.”

Russia has focused on striking Ukraine's energy infrastructure over the last month, causing power shortages and rolling outages across the country. Kyiv was having hourly rotating blackouts Sunday in parts of the city and the surrounding region.

Rolling blackouts also were planned in the Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions, Ukraine’s state-owned energy operator, Ukrenergo, said.

A major city with no power, water, sewage system or heat...and temps below zero. Vast food shortages as well.

Likely even several major cities over 300,000 people.

Trains require electricity for their switching and signalling infrastructure. Trucks require electricity to pump diesel.

This will cause general collapse in Ukrainian society. No country could survive this.

Ukraine needs to make a deal. Desperately.

Sorry Ukes.

NATO/Uncle Sam were never going to let you be neutral. They chose you to fight their proxy-war against Russia. And after 2014, you couldn’t escape your fate.

Baloney. It’s a good move to bring this idiot Uke government to the table. And to think, all they had to do was quit shelling and ethnically cleansing the Donbass. That and just not be part of NATO.
They are getting what they deserve...they let the Galician nazis get too much control and now they are all suffering.

The British bombed the Ruhr dams in WW2.

The Germans not only lost electrical power, they got flooded.

Shouldn’t have blown up Putin’s bridge to Crimea.

It is less worse to kill off an electrical power plant than a living, breathing Ukrainian soldier.

Some will survive, just as the human race did before the luxury of infrastructure made our lives so much easier.

“Leningrad held out in WW2.”

Half the population was evacuated before the siege began. The other half had no escape route.

Leningrad did not hold out.

The city was nearly depopulated by the time the 900 days was over.

There will be a mass emigration to the West. Ukrainians will flock to Western Europe, which is experiencing its own energy problems.

BELGRADE, May 24 – NATO airstrikes on Yugoslavia’s power grid left millions of people without electricity or water service today, bringing the war over Kosovo more directly into the lives of civilians across the country.

Will they WALK?

That’s a tough row to hoe when it’s 20 below.

The problem with a proxy war is that the civilians figure out they're better off just walking away.

For years, young Ukrainians wanted to join the EU, not to better their country, but to get their EU work cards in order to leave Ukraine.

So-called "refugees" from Arab countries have more rights and privileges in European countries than Ukrainians do.

Over 5 million have left already and another 10 million have been displaced internally. They can drive out of Ukraine to Poland or Hungary. Or take a train as long as they continue running. The estimate is that 40% of the electrical grid has been knocked out.

People will leave if the conditions are unbearable. Transportation will be provided by the West. War refugees are not new. History is replete with examples.

Gasoline and Diesel require electricity to be pumped into storage and out of storage to trains and cars and buses.

Locally available supplies dry up very, very fast.

Even before the war, Ukraine was a poor country. It’s per capita GDP is just $100 more than Cuba’s. Being able to settle in Europe or the US is like winning the lottery. Many of the 5 million who have left will want to stay in the West.
