U.S. job openings rebounded in September after falling sharply in August, according to federal data released Tuesday, despite pressure from high inflation and interest rates.

American businesses posted 10.7 million open jobs by the final day of September, according to the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) report, up from 10.1 million in August.

I saw a fairly recent clip of Mike Rowe talking about 11 million job openings, and also 7 million people sitting at home and declining to seek work.

He pointed out a serious societal problem in this — 11 million job openings represents Opportunity. Lots and lots of opportunity.

And 7 million people are saying, “I have no faith in that. I don’t see these jobs leading to anything good. Working in America at some sort of entry-level job isn’t any real “opportunity” to achieve the American Dream. It’s dead-end drudgery and I’m not interested.”

You can criticize that sort of viewpoint — but it’s out there and it’s new and it indicates that America has changed.

Our factories in Indiana and Iowa are begging for people to come back to work. All of the guys who had the senority retired during Covid.

20 year olds do not want to work in manufacturing plants.

“ 20 year olds do not want to work in manufacturing plants.”

They can always learn to code.

Job openings is a good thing???

It's good if you want the economy to be growing and bad if you think a strong economy is helping to drive inflation.

The participation rate is what matters most...

What good are millions of jobs if no one applies for them...

It’s not good and I don’t see how to turn it around.

Also — somewhat related, but not the same — there is the “quiet quitting” phenomenon. That’s basically: “I have a job. I get a paycheck. I will make no contribution and do as little as I possibly can and I see how long it takes for the paychecks to stop coming.”

That’s also new. And it’s the same problem: Many people do not think that the American Dream is achievable for them. Work is pointless. It doesn’t get you anywhere. So why try? I give up.

Again: people can criticize the viewpoint, but it’s out there and it doesn’t seem to be going away. That’s a problem.

People aren’t staying in jobs they interview. It’s crazy.

I’m a bit behind the times. I just finally saw “quiet quitting” defined the other day. If people actually did what’s expected that would be a benefit.

Left out of that equation is the thousands and thousands of workers who quit who didn't want the jab. Tons of folk will never work again. Throw in the deaths from covid and the vaccine. Not only that, but the customer service field has to put up with animals, karens, urbans, and others while working for a company that made you go thru hoops during covid and now.

But what if you don’t have a growing economy and outrageous inflation- which is what we’re dealing with?

Yup. There are many aspects to this. But the bottom-line is that many people have pretty good reasons for saying, “I’m opting out. This is a broken society and I want no part of it. I’m through putting up with this crap.”

It's generally a sign the economy wants to grow. That's usually good but if the number of openings are growing because employers can't find employees that's a problem.

I think the point is you can't say it's good or bad without the context.
