Rail strike threat rises as second union rejects labor deal

Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The threat of a crippling nationwide freight rail strike next month gathered speed Wednesday after a second railroad union rejected a tentative labor agreement.

The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, which represents more than 6,000 workers who install and repair signal systems, voted down the proposed four-year deal, brokered by the Biden administration last month, with 60.5% against the agreement and 39.2% voting for it.

"For the first time that I can remember, the BRS members voted not to ratify a National Agreement, and with the highest participation rate in BRS history," Michael Baldwin, president of the BRS, said in a statement.

BRS is the second union to reject the proposed agreement. Earlier this month, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees District, which represents 23,000 track maintenance workers, rejected a similar deal.

Both unions have signaled Nov. 19, as a possible strike date. While six other unions have approved the labor deal, a strike by any one of the 12 freight rail unions would prevent others from crossing a picket line.

Last month, President Joe Biden celebrated the tentative deal which gives union members an average 24% pay increase over five years, improved working conditions and caps on what they have to pay for healthcare. But the deal did not include paid sick leave, which was a major obstacle in the negotiations.

Brandon's deal conveniently delayed a strike until after the midterm elections. There is a shortage of diesel anyway, so a rail strike would allow for more fuel to heat homes...see how things always fall neatly into place for FJB?

Stock up while you can! Food, water, medicines, ammo, fuel for your backup generator.....you DO have a generator, right?

This winter will be a trial run for the preppers’ Armageddon.

No rail supplies, no commercial road supplies, if these twin mortal threats to the economy combine in a perfect storm, it is easy to forecast blood in the streets and a sweeping away of our liberties.

I’d like someone to do us all a favor.

Attend one of these negotiations and prior to them beginning, ask any of the union reps where they were when Mantle Ridge, Paul Hilal and Hunter Harrison started taking apart CSX and firing thousands.

To the point that the service got so bad that manufacturers and business leaders approached Congress for help. Of course, Harrison, before he died(I hope it was painful) stated that his job responsibility is to the shareholders not the folks doing business with the railroad.

Then ask them where they were when Norfolk Southern started following the same policies, running the place down to skeleton crews to boost stock prices. Now, both are having trouble backfilling positions as people quit or retire and the younger generation doesn’t want that job anymore.

Those unions were bought and paid for now they’re crying.

If you are asking me, specifically, then LOL. This Floridian has lived in the land of hurricanes for well over two decades. We have two dual-fuel generators and a separate battery inverter/generator. That's in addition to countless battery backups for phones, tablets, flashlights, etc. Pretty good propane supply too.

Yes, this and the inflated cost of diesel fuel will cripple the already overly burdened “over the road” freight system, possibly to a standstill.

I’m sure our Secretary of Transportation will get right on this.

I fully expect the dims to launch all kinds of mayhem right after the mid terms regardless who wins. If the repubs win, it will be their way to punish the voters for rejecting them. If the dims steal the elections, it will be about exercising power.
Be prepared.

Biden’s quid pro quo with the unions to delay the strike until after the elections and then Biden will give them everything they want.

Biden’s quid pro quo with the Saudis to delay the production cuts until after the elections and then Biden will continue to fund their war in Yemen.

Fortunately, these things are not saving Biden.

The typical Democratic party solution is to throw a pile a money at a problem isn’t going to work. The administration isn’t listening to the railroad workers plea.

Money is NOT the issue.

It’s same day, unscheduled sick leave without getting docked points that are nearly impossible to work off. Once a number of points are amassed you are mandatorily fired.

As a railroad worker, you can’t get sick or any of your family have a medical emergency without getting fired.

Like clockwork, a GOP win Nov. 8 will bring news of explosive growth in homeless populations. A railway strike and fuel shortages will be fully blamed on the GOP before any of the newly elected pols take office. The shameless MSM is licking their chops for the opportunity.

After he gets done with that, it will probably be time for bike lane incentives.

Global recession is incoming.

How are the Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Bank of England, Bank of China, REITs, and other investment firms doing?
How about when housing adjusts down?
How are the bond markets looking?
Why hasn’t China released GDP numbers for three straight quarters?

Gas, inflation, logistics, strikes, and warfare...

Things are not proceeding in a good direction.
Unless one is a WEF “Great Reset” POS.

Absence Control.
Used to have that in the old Bell System.
With less than two years OTJ, sick pay didn’t start until the fifth consecutive day off. This worked down until you had 5 yrs and could get paid from the first day.
No matter how long you had OTJ, if you took 5 individual days off, each within 90 days of the previous, bye-bye.
Like everything else in life, we learned to live with it.
