For Japan, losing Taiwan to China could be a disaster as it would jeopardise key shipping lanes that supply nearly all of Japan’s oil and other materials it uses for manufacturing.

Between China’s 20th Communist Party Congress, that began Sunday, and the next one in 2027, Japan will undertake its biggest arms buildup since World War Two in a race to deter Beijing from war in East Asia, according to Japanese government officials and security analysts.

Japan identified China as its chief adversary in its 2019 defence white paper, worried that Beijing’s flouting of international norms, pressure on Taiwan and rapid military modernisation posed a serious security threat. That anxiety has intensified since Russia invaded Ukraine, weakening Japanese public opposition to rearming, security experts say.

Japan’s government “has the wind at its back and will use that to do whatever it can,” said Takashi Kawakami, a professor at Takushoku University in Tokyo. By pointing to 2027 as the moment when East Asia’s power balance may tip in China’s favour, Japan’s government can rally support for greater defence spending, he added.

In addition to being the next time Communist Party delegates gather in Beijing, 2027 is the next major milestone on China’s military modernisation roadmap and the centennial of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army. At a congressional hearing last year, U.S. Indo-Pacific commander Admiral Philip Davidson said that China’s threat against Taiwan could “manifest”

“We have always been at war with Eastasia.” Then, later, “We are at war with Eurasia. We have always been at war with Eurasia.”.

George Orwell was highly prescient.

True that. The Japanese can get a bit peevish about such things. Let’s hope that Biden doesn’t forget what century he’s in, and slap an oil embargo against Japan.

The Jap Navy is a significant add-on to the USN.

They can provide 36 destroyers to supplement the USN’s 68 Arleigh Burkes.

3 light/helo carriers to add to the USN’s 9 LHA’s.

13 very modern submarines.

I think Japan looks at the population of the U.S. and concludes that it better get off it’s ass and DEFEND itself.

This is a population of people that elected America Hating, No Resume, INEXPERIENCED Barack Obama twice and a mentally ill unstable man NOW.

I lived there (in Japan) 2 years and know them well and I think they look across the Pacific and see a population with a too high percentage of sub par people including homosexuals, trannies, lesbians, homeless, meth-heads, cocaine blowers, fentanyl death wish types, marxists, socialists, democrats, RINO’s, homeless, non-patriots, police defunders, outright America haters and perpetually unemployed losers. In other words, they don’t see a RELIABLE American people standing behind their flag anymore.

Finally, Japanese leaders conclude that if an American majority of human debris is about to achieve the destruction of America that they have long sought that they (the Japanese) have lost their protector.

“They’ve just now figured it out?”

Agree. They should have figured it out 25 years ago...if not before then. I suspect, instead, that they knew, but figured the US would be around to defend them.

Now they see that the US has pretty much spent its military in Ukraine and is one Hypersonic barrage from leaving the Pacific Theater for good (as having to explain away the loss of a Carrier is literally impossible), that any hope for the US to come to Taiwan/Japan’s rescue is about over, so Japan now realizes that they’re on their own.

Better late then never, I guess.

They figured it out about 15 years ago. Hence their naval building program.
