Former House Speaker Paul Ryan complained that Trump didn't act on a top conservative priority.
"He and I fought about Medicare and entitlement reform all the time," Ryan said Wednesday.
Trump largely ditched the GOP goal of safety-net cuts, but some conservatives still float the move.
Paul Ryan has one big complaint about former President Donald Trump: He wasn't willing to pursue cuts to the safety-net programs Ryan had championed for years.
"He and I fought about Medicare and entitlement reform all the time," the former GOP House speaker said Wednesday at a book event at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. "It became clear to me there was no way he wanted to embrace that."
Ryan, now a visiting fellow at AEI, added: "It wasn't popular in his mind, and therefore it wasn't going to be pursued. That was always really frustrating to me."
Ryan was later asked about the unpopularity among voters of cuts Social Security and Medicare, a pair of safety-net programs that provide health and retirement benefits to older Americans. Conservatives like Ryan had long proposed shrinking federal spending on the programs by taking steps like raising the retirement age or privatizing large parts of them.
He defended the ideas and labeled them "radical pragmatism."

That’s true. All the parties are pro-big government now.
Why is the POS Ryan in the news so much suddenly? Midterms need some negative press play? What’s the deal. The POS has been invisible for years and suddenly he’s everywhere chiming in. Go away you POS.
Relax, it’s just the left pushing the same old tired rhetoric they’ve been doing semiannually for 30 years.
Ryan delivered Democrat budgets.

Soros: “Mr. Ryan, it is time for me to collect the favor you owe me. My people will send you a list of talking points and media schedule.”
If Ryan wanted to make government smaller he had a strange way of showing it.
Given control of Congress and the Presidency, Ryan manned the opposition to getting anything really done by perpetuating tyranny by continuing resolution.
The return to regular order and budgets is the only way to control spending. And some government workers will have to lose their jobs.
Cut 30% of the federal workforce and then we can talk about entitlement reform. Show me you really care.
Business Insider was bad until the future started looking grim for the RATs. Now they are the farthest left rag on the planet. Lots of hysteria going on over there.
But the Ryan promised repeal of ObamaCare was then killed by — you guessed it — Speaker Ryan.
“Ryan delivered Democrat budgets.”
It turns out that Paul Ryan was and is indeed an assistant Democrat.
Cut 30% of the federal workforce and then we can talk about entitlement reform. Show me you really care.”
Stop sending money to Ukraine and a thousand other countries, and maybe we can talk about cutting money for Americas elderly.
And neither did you Paulie
Trump was never for cutting SS and medicare. He just wasn’t.

Will someone please take Paul hunting-—ala Dick Cheney???
Ryan is such a dumb ass.
Did he introduce a bill?
Trump didn’t veto anything related to Medicare.
I’d also point out, that there are over 100 different
freebie programs out there, that aren’t labeled as
Welfare but are essentially Welfare. It amounts to
over $1 Trillion dollars per year. Did Ryan introduce
a bill to put and end to that massive leaky faucet?
This little prick had the chance of a lifetime to
introduce all manner of legislation to help this
nation be safe long into the future.
He had one item on his list. It sunsets in 14 months.
What a Paulhole.
Funny how it's always cuts to programs that workers are forced to pay into, but never cuts to free government money to those who didn't contribute.
Always talking about cuts to Medicare and Social Security but you never hear about cuts to welfare.
Oh, and how about using the billions to Ukraine for folks in this country.
