New England Risks Winter Blackouts as Gas Supplies Tighten

Posted on 10/17/2022 7:18:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Grid officials warn of strain as the region competes with European countries for shipments of liquefied natural gas

New England power producers are preparing for potential strain on the grid this winter as a surge in natural-gas demand abroad threatens to reduce supplies they need to generate electricity.

New England, which relies on natural-gas imports to bridge winter supply gaps, is now competing with European countries for shipments of liquefied natural gas, following Russia’s halt of most pipeline gas to the continent. Severe cold spells in the Northeast could reduce the amount of gas available to generate electricity as more of it is burned to heat homes.

The region’s power-grid operator, ISO New England Inc., has warned that an extremely cold winter could strain the reliability of the grid and potentially result in the need for rolling blackouts to keep electricity supply and demand in balance.

Power producers in New England are limited in their ability to store fuel on site and face challenges in contracting for gas supplies, as most pipeline capacity is reserved by gas utilities serving homes and businesses.

New England’s challenges are becoming more acute as older coal, oil and nuclear-fueled generators shut, leaving gas-fired ones to serve a greater percentage of demand.

“The grid overall is in a much tighter position,” he said. “If we get a sustained cold period in New England this winter, we’ll be in a very similar position as California was this summer.”

Here it comes. The “never happen here” is about to happen here.

New York State won’t allow new gas pipelines to cross it to New England. Plentiful shale gas in PA can’t get to market.

What's the problem? Just install more windmills and solar cells to replace all those shuttered gas, oil, coal and nuclear plants. Problem solved.

Honestly, how hard can that possibly be? Just snap your fingers and it's done. Who needs engineers when you have Magic Green Genies?

"Natural gas may be cheaper, but my utility company (Duke) charges not only for your usage, but adds an additional $40 each month just “to have” their natural gas service."

Here in Alabama it's $11/month flat fee for natural gas, before charging for usage. For power it's $15.60/month flat fee (they tell you it's $14.50, but they add a 50¢ rider on top of that to make it $15, then add a 4% state tax to make it $15.60). So if you have both power and natural gas it's $26.60/month even if you don't use their services.

For me it's just $15.60/month (before paying for what I pull from the grid) because I converted my natural gas appliances to electric a year ago. I did that so that the sky high cost of natural gas doesn't impact our family's finances directly.

I talked to a yard superintendent at one of the largest drillers in the East. They have 41 rigs working.

They stopped drilling in Michigan because the gas pressure was so high it was dangerous.

Thanks to Biden and the Democrats all of our energy eggs are in one basket. They have created a single point of failure. There is no Plan B.

And you think that your electricity prices won’t reflect natural gas prices?

How much did you spend to convert your appliances to electric. It would cost me a fortune to switch to electric heat, cooktop, and water heater. Those conversion costs alone would pay for a LOT of slightly higher natural gas prices.

I can’t imagine there’s any simple payback on such a conversion unless electricity is priced at a third of natural gas.

If you had a dozen nuclear power plants under construction, I could see lower electricity prices in your future.

Yep. I was a life long resident of Ct and watched as eco zealots mindlessly opposed pipelines and clean energy sources. Energy prices steadily increased over the years. Now the greenies are getting what they want. Let them shiver and freeze in the dark. They got it coming.

I owned a home in Ringwood NJ from 1998-2006 that was a crazy mishmash. Had electric stove, gas dryer, oil heat/hot water. Also had city water and septic tank.

Good points.

I suggest Plan B includes electing business-minded adults who think, rather than feel.

Wondering where old, reliable numb nuts John F'n Kerry will be spending this winter. I'll wager the French Riviera.

Recall the Obamas stocked up on 2500 gal. propane for their Martha's Vineyard compound. Pretty sure they winter in Hawaii anyway.

Umm, your question kind of assumes that those who voted for this crappola actually “thought”.

Overly generous of you.

“Best wishes for a mild New England winter...
Gorebull warming strikes again in the midwest!

That “ain’t happening”! The Biden/Dem Congress Winter of 2022~23 is now starting!:

Freeze alerts issued for more than 70 million Americans as coldest air of season invades Midwest, South, East:

The cold air will be accompanied by snow, rain and wind from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, as the season’s first significant snow storm buries the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

We should set up a betting pool to predict where green weenies spend the cold winter of 22-23.

John F'n Kerry: French Riviera

Obamas: Hawaii

Al Gore: Miami

Lesko Brandon: Delaware Basement

Legs Up Harris: Southern California

The elites have their winter and summer homes/estates.

The elites, who ski 7 days a week, will soon be in their winter ski homes soon enjoying their private slopes/lifts. While 80 million Americans freeze their butts off.
