- A shock turnaround in equities sent Wall Street searching for something -- anything -- to explain how yet another red-hot inflation number translated into the best day for bulls in a week.
Among the answers: increasingly sturdy positioning including well-provisioned hedges, a watershed moment for chart watchers, and several less-than-terrible earnings reports. Throw in some short covering, and the result was a trough-to-peak run-up in S&P 500 futures that approached 5% at its widest.
Expect the unexpected has become the only mantra in a market when cross-currents are flowing from every direction, including a Federal Reserve bent on subduing inflation while keeping half an eye on financial stability. Thursday’s turnaround came after the S&P 500 erased half its climb from 2020’s pandemic low, a hit to wealth that while showing no sign yet of curbing inflation, may one day play a part in achieving that goal.

A suckers rally ?…
You might see a rally if the GOP takes the senate and house?
Probably not Wall Street is mostly democrats…
I think it will sink or not change til the Fed starts lowering interest rates
a dead cat stuffed with unobtainium
Isn’t it called “Dead cat bounce”?
Stocks always tank in the months leading up to midterm elections. Then it recovers. This may take awhile since our government rulers are purposely crushing the middle class.
Suckers drop at open to shake out the weak hands. Then institutions come in to scoop up their shares. Then in a few days the Fed announces a 1Q pause in rate hikes and the market jumps -which helps the D’s at election.
I wonder how the 8.7% increase of the social security, and government pension will affect inflation?
That is a lot of money in the market next year.
Will the Feds stop at 5% with the goverment debt so high?
I don’t think I have ever seen a 1300 point swing in a single trading day.
Why are stocks going up? Because I got out of the market a while ago, that’s why. Soon as I buy back in, expect a major crash.
There has already been two dead-cat bounces the last two weeks. I suspect this is the same. Time will tell.
I wonder what ever happened to the Plunge Protection Team of the Bush era?
Give everyone a heads up when you’re going back in please.
:)
Maybe they’re back?
All I know is I don’t understand what’s happening.
Always...ain’t always.
“I wonder what ever happened to the Plunge Protection Team of the Bush era?”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I think you got your answer today.
The market is bipolor.
