Moscow has announced it will evacuate Kherson after an appeal from the Russian-installed head of the region, raising fears the occupied city at the heart of the south Ukrainian oblast will become a new frontline.
Marat Khusnullin, a Russian deputy prime minister, told state television on Thursday that residents would be helped to move away from the region in south Ukraine, which remains only partly occupied by invading troops due to a successful Ukrainian counterattack in recent months.
“The government took the decision to organise assistance for the departure of residents of the [Kherson] region to other regions of the country,” Khusnullin said.
The development followed a public request on the social media platform Telegram by Vladimir Saldo, a former mayor of the port city, who was installed in April by the Russian forces as head of the wider Kherson region.
Saldo, who Ukrainian prosecutors have charged with treason, had specifically called on Vladimir Putin to help those who wished to flee the fighting, claiming it was Ukrainian attacks imperilling the lives of locals.
Saldo, who was mayor of Kherson city between 2002 and 2012, said: “I want to ask you [the Russian leadership] for help in organising such work. We, residents of the Kherson region, certainly know that Russia does not abandon its own, and Russia always lends a shoulder where it is difficult.”

Russia can’t win. Not as long as the EU continues hiring and arming wave after wave of Ukrainian mercenaries. Russia doesn’t have the money to keep up.
The good news is that when Ukraine liberates the 5 oblasts the pro-Russian fifth columnists will have already fled.
The remaining population will be strongly pro-Ukraine and solve the country will be free of the internal dissention that has caused problems since independence.
Is Putin planning to use a nuke?
I never predict the ultimate outcome of a conflict, but how can this be happening when certain geniuses here told us that Russia chews up the Uke offensive, all according to the plan, Ukraine is really Russia (that’s one of my favorites) yada yada yada.
Since when did Ruzzia care about the people who lived there? When they launch missiles at apartment buildings?
Putin can’t nuke Kherson because he will contaminate the water supply to Crimea if he nukes it.
Putin’s current nuke threat is to nuke a bride over the Dnipro near Kyiv with a tactical nuke as some sort of an ultimatum.
LIES! PROPAGANDA! DEEP STATE!!!

Putin nuking the country to Russia’s Southwest would be so breathtakingly stupid, only a senile Stalinist could believe in it.
Oh, hi, Brandon.
Putin’s tears should have some yellow in them too.
Translation from neocon to reality: What’s left of the Ukrainian military is making its last stand in Kherson. The Russians are preparing to repeal and destroy the invaders into Russian soil.
Imagine what America would be if we cancelled Russian kgb/fsb influence in our politics and culture.
Oh, good, any of that 87% who did vote for annexation and did so without duress can have a reunion with the 8500 Russians in Russia who voted for Kherson to be Russian.

Are they mercenaries if they’re defending their own country from an invading army? I’m not sure that’s the definition of mercenary they taught us back in school.
Your Putin just threw Kherson under the bus to try to save Crimea.
Won’t work.
Of course, we know the usual suspects will be along to say “Russia never wanted Kherson anyway!”
Update on Russian military operations in Ukraine for October 13, 2022
- UN General Assembly vote demonstrates continued support for Russia by India and China as well as many other nations across the developing and newly industrialized world;
- Russia continues missile and drone strikes across Ukraine; - Ukraine’s plea for air defense systems is impractical and reflect desperation in Kiev;
- West is attempting to mix and match air defense systems to create an ad hoc integrated network;
- Many air defense components will take a year or longer to arrive in Ukraine;
- Many air defense components will be damaged or destroyed before the imagined integrated network is complete;
- A turning point is coming where the West will have to decide between escalating or abandoning its proxy war in Ukraine;
You really need to work on how to spin the Russian retreat from Kherson. What will strike you as a palatable excuse to keep believing in Russian victory as they retreat from city after city for month after month?
Yeah, where would the fallout go? Well, prevailing winds would either blow it right back into Russia, over to Georgia (where Russia invading troops are also located), or to Turkey (who is already turning on Russia). Not good any way you slice it.
