You’re probably right. Although, I have long thought there should be conference realignment to four conferences, each with a championship, with the winners going to a playoff. Create a new division for the remaining Div 1A teams not in the four conferences. Call it the auto parts-fast food bowl division.
I was really bored one day, and I worked out a structure for college football.
Basically the two conferences, each with 5 divisions of 6-7 teams each, trying to keep the traditional divisions intact.
Top two teams in each division make the playoffs, so that’s basically 20 teams, with Division winners getting a First Round Bye.
Each division has a corresponding “subdivision” of teams that are currently in the non-Power 5 conferences, also consisting of 6-7 teams, with one team from the Subdivision playing in the main division. If the Subdivision team actually makes the conference playoffs, they would automatically stay up the following season, otherwise they would have to play against the Subdivision winner to stay up. So it’s kind of a Pro/Reg system.
What’s cool is, now, instead of meaningless bowl games throughout the month of December, you’ll have the Subdivision playoff games to determine who gets “promoted” to the main division, and it gives the lesser Division I programs a lot of exposure.
