democratic countries work things out. The Czeck Republic and Slovakia separated peacefully. Canada allowed Quebec to hold a referendum on independence, and the U.K. allowed Scotland. Agitation by some doesn’t necessarily mean a majority. Plus, there are numerous property issues to consider. There are also halfway positions such as autonomous zones.
But this peaceful approach does not characterize authoritarian countries. Rule by force is the old way. It’s the way of the Mongols who reduced Muscovy to vassal status for hundreds of years. It was the rule of the Czars extending Muscovy under the name of Russia, to the east and to the west through conquest.
It was by force that Russia was invaded by King Carolus of Sweden, Emperor Napoleon of France and Fuhrer Hitler of Germany. What goes around comes around.
We, the United States, seek to put an end to the endless cycle of wars of conquest. We were not very successful, after WWI, in convincing the victors to not sew the seeds of another world war with a vindictive treaty. We were successful, however, after WWII, in reconstructing Germany and Italy as democratic countries. We have come to the aid of countries being invaded or attacked by terrorists since WWII, not always successfully.
Now comes Putin with his paranoia and incompetent army, trying to re-establish the imperial ways. And you with your potty mouth.

You know damned well how Uncle Sam would deal with armed secessionists. The same way Russia dealt with chechens. But here is the rub.
