NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Thursday expressed support for New York City's lawsuit seeking to halt the spread of "ghost guns," as city and state officials try to hold sellers of the largely untraceable firearms accountable.
In a "statement of interest" filed in Manhattan federal court, the Department of Justice expressed "serious concerns" about the proliferation of ghost guns, and said kits containing the weapons' components are classified as firearms under federal gun control law.
"Ghost guns are a major contributor to the ongoing plague of gun violence," U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in Brooklyn said in a statement accompanying the filing, which U.S. Attorney Damian Williams in Manhattan also signed.
New York City and state Attorney General Letitia James on June 29 filed two lawsuits accusing 10 out-of-state distributors of creating a public nuisance by selling unfinished frames and receivers to buyers within the state.
Both lawsuits were filed six days after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a century-old New York law that strictly limited the carrying of guns outside the home.
Three of the five defendants in the city's lawsuit have settled, and agreed to stop sales to city residents.
Christian Waugh, a lawyer for Indie Guns, one of the remaining defendants, in an email said "no one seriously believes that craft guns" contribute to rising crime rates.

There they go again blaming the guns rather than the shooters of the guns.
We should support lawsuits against tyrant supporters.
Yea, you should seriously doubt that statement. How many gang bangers have training in machine tool and die and can finish out a frame/receiver?
They use stolen guns, often taken from cars they break into.
Arresting all blacks and hispanics would take more criminals off the street than arresting “ghost gun sellers”. Why not just arrest everyone? Why does there even need to be a crime?
The right of The People to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed.
Yeah, that statement should be challenged on its face, but frankly, it’s also completely irrelevant to the question of Constitutionality.
But let’s face it: the actions of the state of New York have been openly hostile to gun ownership of any kind as they continue to press for laws that are completely contrary to the protections of the second amendment... so they’ll say or do anything to try and convince a sympathetic court to support their anti-gun measures.
I would bet that New York City and state Attorney General Letitia James isn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the pack.
Maybe this DIM BULB should focus her efforts on actual criminals who would be too lazy to make a gun when stealing one is so much easier.
The "Fast and Furious" US Government?
Not Surprised.
“Arresting all blacks and hispanics would take more criminals off the street than arresting “ghost gun sellers”. Why not just arrest everyone? Why does there even need to be a crime?”
If it saves just one life. Or the other favorite. ALL gun owners must be punished for the actions of a few. WELL... Your statement makes sense using democrat liberal logic..
Never forget that when they cite ‘ghost gun” statistics it includes guns that have had the serial numbers removed. Which vastly increases the numbers. it’s a misleading statistic but they don’t care about that.
“”Ghost guns are a major contributor to the ongoing plague of gun violence,”
I would like to see the data supporting that conclusion. How many violent crimes are committed with ghost guns? I would be the number is near to zero.
