Family That Owns Woburn (MA) Restaurants Arrested Over Smuggling Ring, Feds Say
NBC Boston ^ | Oct 4, 2022

Two restaurants were raided by federal and local law enforcement in Woburn, Massachusetts, Tuesday morning in a human trafficking and indentured servitude operation allegedly conducted by several members of one family.

The Dog House and Tudo Na Brasa, both on the same block on Main Street and owned by the family, were swarmed by authorities in a raid connected to allegations of human trafficking that was first reported by NBC10 Boston.

Jesse Moraes and his son Hugo Moraes, Woburn residents and co-owners of the restaurants, were smuggling people into the country illegally, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court outlining charges against them. They worked with Chelbe Willams Moraes, Jesse's brother, and Marcos Chacon on the scheme.

The complaint noted that investigators with the Department of Homeland Security were looking into seven people. Allegations that prompted the raid included both labor- and sex-related trafficking, sources told the NBC10 Investigators, but sex-related charges have not been filed at this time.

The Jesse Moraes, Hugo Moraes and Marcos Chacon were held in federal detention after appearing in court in Boston Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors said. It wasn't immediately clear if they had attorney who could speak to the charges; Chelbe Moraes lives in Brazil.

According to prosecutors, Jesse and Chelbe Moraes coordinated to bring Brazilians who wanted to be smuggled to the U.S. into the country for a hefty fee, between $18,000 and $22,000. When they couldn't afford to pay all of it, they would offer to let them work off their human smuggling debt by working for about $3 an hour from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The migrants were housed in one of the Moraes family's properties in Woburn, authorities said. Marcos Chacon allegedly sold fake identification to the migrants to help them obtain work...

“Migrants” with “$18,000 and $22,000” or nearly that much to spend on being smuggled are not “Impoverished victims of oppression just seeking a better life”!

Deport them and let their monetary loss be a lesson along with the sweatshop stint.

See, now that’s why they should only smuggle people into the country legally.

More “refugees” sticking it to Americans. But Americans sure felt good about their “woke” selves letting them do it.

I moved out of MA to Tennessee because my once quiet, conservative neighborhood had been overrun ny Brazilians, Guatemalans and Mexican miscreants. The cacaphony was beyond tolerating. Despite best efforts of local government, our town had become unrecognizable in less than 10 years.

I am very curious about what town that was.

I actually grew up in Boston (Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan) and I was pretty much always a minority myself. Now I see the demographics changing in a major way all over towns everywhere. Truly, this is an unexpected development in a lot of these areas. I do not have problems with my neighbors at all, but I certainly am tired of listening to sirens blaring all day and night. This is a township not a city. I wonder where everybody went.

Milford. Worcester County.

Wifey and I sit on our front porch here in NE TN at the end of the work day looking out over our section of the river, watching the boats and it's just sublime.
We don't miss Milford at all. And we lived there for well over 40 years. Two houses and two kids ago.

We've visited there a couple of times and it is just not the same anymore.

I am a little familiar with Milford. One of my granddaughters was born there. I have a friend or maybe a few who work in that hospital.

There was an incident several years ago where some relative of Obama (who was President then ( was caught drunk driving and) caused an accident, though he had no Driver's License. Of course they let him go totally.

I recall driving through the central part of that ‘town’ and the old Mill aspects of the place can be found all over Massachusetts. I was thinking of Henry Thoreau's descriptive narratives of 19th century New England. When I find myself in places such as Lowell, Lawrence, Brockton, or other places I wonder of life of those days. How exciting things must have been for the earlier denizens of such places.

Now of course it is all ruined, but we pretend else.

FWIW, I have been to Tennessee two consecutive Summers. Sort of like the area. I would not consider Florida as a haven. My boy has mentioned it as well, but he has In Laws somewhere in that state. I would go in a heartbeat if the decision was unilateral. Alas, it requires a unanimous vote. I think that I can get it done, maybe next year.
