Group of former Republican Ohio leaders tout their support for Tim Ryan (they're former Republicans alright!)

Several Republican former leaders from around Ohio are coming out in support of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tim Ryan as they condemn the actions of former President Donald Trump.

Phil Heimlich, former Cincinnati City Council member and Hamilton County Commission member, described himself as a staunch conservative who looks to the polices of former President Ronald Reagan as a guiding principle.

“Whether we're talking foreign policy, whether we're talking law and order, whether we're talking fighting extremism, if Ronald Reagan were here today, he wouldn't have anything to do with J.D. Vance. And I believe that we, as Republicans shouldn't have anything to do with him either,” said Heimlich during a press event in the Ohio Statehouse.

Heimlich said Vance’s alignment with Trump puts him at odds with the values traditional conservatives support, such as protecting democracy from election deniers, respecting the “rule of law,” and fighting against fascism.

Heimlich was joined by Chris Gibbs, former Shelby County Republican Party chair and president of Rural America 2020. Gibbs, who is now a registered Democrat, said Tim Ryan is a candidate who represents the values he used to look for within the Republican party.

“The GOP of today and the candidates that it stands for election are yet a shell of what the Grand Old Party used to be. Void of those guiding principles, diplomacy, statesmanship, compassion, personal responsibility,” said Gibbs.

The group also includes Jim Petro, the Republican former Ohio Attorney General and Ohio Auditor, and Rocky Saxbe, a former Ohio House member. Saxbe created the group “Republicans for Strickland” in 2006 when Ted Strickland ran for Ohio Governor against Kenneth Blackwell.

Heimlich is a RABID neverTrumper. He went absolutely nuts over Trump getting the nomination and the Presidency. Heimlich definitely suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I have zero respect for Phil. He needs to get help.

We in Ohio are still trying to purge the Boehner/Kasich wing from the R party. It’s still here, and like herpes it won’t go away.

There were two pro-Ryan ads on YouTube today that started out with...”I am a staunch conservative Republican, and this is why I will not vote for JD Vance..”

I didn’t bother to listen to the “staunch Republican’s” reasons for not voting for Vance. All I know is that if you are voting for Ryan in Ohio, you are not a conservative.
