More than 143,000 households of color would need to become homeowners to close Washington’s racial homeownership gap, a chasm that persists because of a shortage of housing, skyrocketing home prices and discriminatory practices, a state report released this week found.
About 31% of Black households in Washington own their homes, compared to about 68% of white households, according to census data included in the report. Ownership rates also lag for Hispanic, American Indian and Alaskan Native and Asian households, though Black Washingtonians face the largest gap.
In response, the Washington state Department of Commerce said it will ask the state legislature for $60 million to boost homeownership.
Most of those funds, $50 million, would go toward building affordable housing for ownership and increasing assistance for down payments and closing costs. Another $5 million would help nonprofits grow their “capacity and resources,” and $5 million would fund counseling for people whose credit scores or debt are preventing them from buying a home.
The department hopes to direct at least half of the $50 million to organizations targeting Black, Indigenous and Latino homebuyers, but that may prove difficult.
The Seattle-based Nehemiah Initiative is one group that could tap into greater funding. The nonprofit aims to develop affordable homes for purchase on property currently owned by local Black-led churches. But finding funding even for the early stages of developing the projects has proved difficult, said president and CEO Donald King.

The solution is simple. White, Asian and Jewish people should be prohibited from buying houses until after they have adopted an official Little Black Buddy and bought a house for him.

What do they mean, by “discriminatory practices”???? Haven’t we passed laws to outlaw discrimination? This makes one wonder, what “discrimination” is being tolerated by the liberal state of Washington, which is somehow to blame for these issues?????

They do realize the percentage of blacks in this country is >12%, right? Probably fewer in Oregon. I guess since blacks commit 50% of all murders they should own 50% of all housing, using their “logic”. The self-loathing of liberal whites is unbelievable.

Thing is, the color that makes the difference in housing is green. If you have the money, you can nearly always buy the home that strikes your fancy.
Why do blacks Washingtonians find themselves with the largest gap in home ownership? If it were racism, you’d expect the other groups mentioned would find themselves just as far behind. Maybe it’s something else. Something that throwing money at non-profits won’t help.

It’s the only way to erase racial inequalities - erase the races.
Taking money from those who earn it and giving it to those who don’t won’t solve the problem. Free money will attract more and more, and the problem will grow.

Equality in opportunity is fair and just.
Equality in outcome is neither.
It is racist to assume that the only reason blacks don’t own more homes is because they are black.
I guess you haven’t heard. The bell-shaped curve which seems to apply to all kinds of things—leaf size, canine size in male baboons, speed of galloping gazelles—absolutely does NOT apply to human intelligence.
Forget about race for a second. Remember Ted Kennedy/GWB’s ‘No Child Left Behind’? Its goal was that 100% of all students would score ‘above average’ ie. ‘proficient’. It was abandoned only when the ugly reality of the bell-shaped curve became to big for even idealists to ignore. They cannot accept that half of the population has to be ‘below average’.
