Iran, which has blamed "foreign enemies" for protests that swept the country after the death of a woman in morality police custody, said on Friday it had arrested nine European nationals for their role in the unrest.

The detention of citizens of Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and other countries is likely to ratchet up tensions between Iran and Western countries over the death of Mahsa Amini.

-Excerpt- Nineteen people were killed after security forces fired on armed protesters attacking a police station, said an official.

What fool would want to go to Iran in the first place? The minute you’ve stepped off the airplane onto the tarmac you’re a target.

Reminds me of the couple that went hiking along the Iran-Iraq border a few years ago, and were snatched by Iranians. I guess hiking in Europe or USA was not enough for them.

If you’re Iranian by birth, but became a citizen of another country and still have family in Iran you would probably want to go back ocassionally. Or if you’re married to an Iranian who won’t leave their family in Iran & you choose to stay there with your spouse?

I remember that. What became of them?

Make the decisions, suffer the consequences. That’s life.

“What fool would want to go to Iran in the first place? “

You have the true believers in (pick your poison) who, like the Americans who hiked across the lines into North Vietnam...and were executed as spies. Then you have relatives of family in Iran who have gone home to visit. They consider themselves to be Iranian and not, say Polish or British. But the Iranians consider them as spies. And, then you have people with spectacularly low IQ’s.

I doubt the CIA would send anyone in as a trained agent using family as a cover. If the CIA wanted to have a source there, they’d probably use someone already in Iran or someone who walks across the border but with all the proper looking paperwork. But how valuable would someone be who doesn’t already have a good position where information comes to them naturally?

That’s why the Mossad are the masters at this kind of game.

You have to hand it to the Mossad: Once you’re on its list, sooner or later, you’ll be visited.

Westerners arrested for “their role” or merely because of their presence and skape goating “foreigners” might still work on some Iranians.

The Mullahs of Theran are also blaming Iranian Kurds for the unrest, despite the problems between the Kurds in Iran and the regime predates the regime, and merely extended into the present following the ouster/fall of the Shah.

I was answering his question of why would anyone want to go there. The consequences of doing so is another subject.
