“Lots of money, except the ending of smoking is the MAIN REASON that Medicare and Social Security are broke. Seems that smokers lived shorter (greatly helping Social Security) and died before needing tons of medical care (greatly helping Medicare).

There’s also the claim, at least, that smoking lowers appetite and may well be a factor in the explosion of obesity, diabetes, and all of those related costs.

So, if a COMPLETE study was to be done, the results might just be flipped, and a lot more than a relatively tiny $1T.”

Yep, absolutely. The Swiss figured this out years ago. The savings from shorter life spans far far outweighed the costs of smoking.

Smokers pay their own way. They die sooner.

Cigarette taxes help fund health care so you need people to smoke.
Womb to the tomb-saved by cigarettes. Heard it somewhere.

Economic losses and deaths from fake experimental “vaccines” far outweigh any economic benefit from the pharmaceutical industry.

Exactly. The billions spent on homosexual diseases greatly dwarf what little has ever been spent on smoking diseases.

I have my lifetime supply of cigars—many of them are “illegal” Cubans.

Kramer? Is that you?

I wonder if they consider early deaths that benefit the Soc Security system. And possibly Medicare too.

My thoughts exactly.

The beautiful thing about smoking is that it kills you shortly after reaching retirement age. You don't get to collect benefits for decades.

And studies have shown that for most people, the lifetime bulk of our medical expenses occur in our last two years of life, whether you're 62 and dying of lung cancer or 92 and dying of just plain being old.

I'd bet if you crunched all the numbers, smoking actually saves money.

Well, this principle can apply to many other things:

Economic losses from excessive regulation far outweigh any economic benefit from climate science

See, this can be fun. :)

There is a lot of oversimplification on this thread.

The world is not divided into “smokers” and “non-smokers”.

The “smokers” may smoke several packs a day, a pack a day, a few smokes a day, one smoke a day, one smoke a week.

There is a huge difference of health effects depending on quantity.

The public policy discussion on this topic is bizarre at best.

A true economist would ask that question. And also ask why we are stampeding to legalize drugs.

The tobacco industry would disagree.

Retarded liberals still pissed off at the Tobacco growers who supported Republicans all those years. It’s not a coincidence that the communist RATS declared war on “Big Oil” and “Big Tobacco”. The fact that Republicans don’t have any money for this election is proof of that.
