State Dept vows Nord Stream 2 will be a 'hunk of metal at bottom of the ocean' if Russia invades Ukraine (Jan 27 article)

The State Department on Thursday unequivocally warned that if Russia invades Ukraine the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will sit unused at the bottom of the ocean.

The controversial pipeline has become the U.S. and NATO’s biggest bargaining chip in its attempts to preserve Kyiv’s sovereignty.

But reporters questioned the diplomatic agency on whether Germany, which would profit from the functioning pipeline, is on the same page when it comes to countering a Russian incursion.

"We continue to have strong, clear communication with our German allies," Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said. "If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward."

Her comments echoed those made by Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this week, but reporters pushed back on the ability to enforce this threat given the pipeline’s physical completion.

"It is not ready to be turned on," Nuland said. "It has not been tested, it has not been certified, it has not met the regulatory pieces that would allow it to be turned on both on the German side and the EU side.

There’s a lot of cognitive dissonance here

the only virtually objective commentary I’ve heard from BBC to date:

first 5min 35sec: Nord Stream reports, incl by former BBC defence & diplomatic correspondent, Jonathan Marcus, Exeter University:

somewhat related.

***11m15s to the end: Vestager: the energy crisis is accelerating the green transition:

AUDIO: 17m28s: 28 Sept: BBC World Service: Business Daily Meets: Margrethe Vestager, European commissioner for competition
Victoria Craig sits down with Ms Vestager to ask about the commission’s win against Google in one of Europe’s biggest courts (which resulted in a record fine).
She also explains the importance of her hallmark legislative endeavours on global competition and fairness in the big tech space...

***And she talks about how the EC’s (European Commission’s) Important Projects of Common European Interest programme – which allows joint investments in riskier technologies – could help alleviate Europe’s energy crisis.

finally, I haven’t once heard BBC reference the following, yet they reported it in Feb:

7 Feb: BBC: Ukraine crisis: Nord Stream 2 will end if Russia invades - Biden
When asked about Nord Stream 2, the US president said “if Russia invades... again, then there will be longer Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”
However he did not give specifics, responding to a question about how he would do this by saying: “I promise you we will be able to do it.”...

The 1,225km (760-mile) Nord Stream 2 pipeline took five years to build and cost $11bn (£8bn). The energy project, which would run under the Baltic Sea, is designed to double Russia’s gas exports to Germany...

Major European businesses have invested heavily in Nord Stream 2. But many groups object to the plan.

Environmentalists question how it will fit in with German efforts to cut emissions and tackle man-made climate change, while politicians at home and abroad fear it could increase Europe’s dependence on Russian energy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously described the pipeline as a “dangerous geopolitical weapon”...

The twenty-first century version of the sinking of the Lusitania.

Except that there were no civilians in the pipeline.

Nevertheless: A provocation to achieve and agenda.

most of the comments at the original thread seemed to be pretty common sense. The idiots now were the same idiots then. One said if Russia succeeded in gaining control of the contested regions of Ukraine, USA would soon split in half, one half controlled by Russia, the other half controlled by China.

Here is the old article quote.
“”The State Department on Thursday unequivocally warned that if Russia invades Ukraine the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will sit unused at the bottom of the ocean.””

Here it the quote that someone in the article said Cruz uses.
“”As Sen. Cruz likes to say, ‘It is currently a hunk of metal at the bottom of the ocean’,” she added. “No gas will flow through it until those things happen.””

While most memes that I have seen suggest that Biden had something to do with the sabotage, I think that we truly have a rouge element that brought this off.

“Under Secretary for Political Affairs” Victoria Nuland has been in so many of the truly evil things that have happened under our government, and (I suspect) well before Obama was the president.

It would not be that hard for government operatives to plan, source and provide operational cover while a few competent allies (our guys or theirs) set adrift an underwater drone. Maybe one of ours operated by GB, or one of theirs operated by our guys. It’s not that hard to peel off a few million from the Ukraine money into a silo.

I do believe that one or more of the Five Eyes brought this off. Details are just not evident yet.

Nuland and her husband have always been neocons’ neocons.

That is, bought off warmongers.

Nevertheless: A provocation to achieve and agenda.

Its now open-season on civilian infrastructure. Might we see some mysterious explosions at LNG terminals? Undersea internet cables cut?

“Just waiting for Russia to retaliate by cutting the internet cables from the US to Europe”

All for some contested regions of Ukraine.

Misconstrued. It was an unused “hunk of metal” before the Russians blew it up.
