White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says we should listen to Native Americans when it comes to renaming sports teams. But if we did, we wouldn’t be renaming any of them.
President Joe Biden hosted the Atlanta Braves to celebrate their 2021 World Series championship while his administration scolded them for their name. When asked about the team name and the Braves' “tomahawk chop” celebration, Jean-Pierre said it’s “important” to have a conversation about renaming the team.
Biden “has consistently emphasized that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” Jean-Pierre said . “You hear that often from this president. The same is true here. And we should listen to Native American and indigenous people who are the most impacted by this.”
Of course, were that true, the Washington Redskins would never have had to change their name to something silly like the “Commanders.” The Washington Post found that 90% of Native Americans did not find the name offensive or think it a slur, even though woke (mostly white) journalists and academics claimed that it was. Just 9% of Native Americans were offended by the name.
But the Redskins were renamed anyway, thanks to media and corporate pressure. The Cleveland Indians preemptively renamed themselves to avoid all the bullying and pressure. And the Braves likely won’t be far behind, nor will the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks, or Florida State Seminoles.

No, but they would like the name changed to Bravex in order to be more “inclusive.”

Progressives are offended on their behalf - that’s all that matters.
Just as they weren’t concerning the Washington Redskins.

As much as I have loathed Jane Fonda over the years, when
she and Ted Turner told the complainers to go pound sand
when they tried to Woke the Tomahawk chops, I laughed my
ass off.
I am part American Indian....and could careless about people getting bent out of shape about it.
But non-Natives are offended the Natives aren’t offended.
So dismantle it all in the name of…….of……I dunno, woke? Peace?
That maiden was totally healthy until the vax took her out....
The “Great, White Saviors”.
As a Viking American I am offended by the Vikings.
Typical: Remove the Indian, Keep the Land.
As a Drugstore Cowboy, I am offended by the Cowboys.
Way to go Land o Lakes. They got rid of the indian and kept the land.
Did you come up with that?
They took away the Indian and kept the land.
Personally I am horrified by the Boston Celtics, how dare they imply that Celts were ferocious and should be celebrated. As a descendant of Celts I insist...they keep the name.
Perhaps in the future we will be more enlightened and name our teams after more enlightened groups...The Seattle Snowflakes, The Tacoma Trannies, The Philadelphia Furries, The Chicago Castrati, The Newark Non-Binaries, etc.
I believe there is very strong support from members of the Seminole tribe to keep the name.
As I recall the Seminole tribe was the only Indian trip to not be defeated by the US Army.
