German politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann spoke about Russia in an interview with RND about suspected attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines.
Two senior German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia over suspected sabotage of Nord Stream. The leaking Russia-to-Europe pipelines are spewing natural-gas into the Baltic Sea.
The Kremlin said claims about Russia's involvement were "predictably stupid and absurd." Two senior German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia over suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream natural-gas pipelines.
Roderich Kiesewetter, a government spokesman for crisis prevention, said in a tweet late Tuesday that the attack was an act of sabotage by Russia to deter and threaten Europe.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chairwoman of the Bundestag's defense committee, also named Russia in comments on the suspected attacks to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland news network.
European lawmakers had previously left open the question about who the suspected Nord Stream saboteur could be. None have yet definitively blamed Russia, and Russia has denied it was the perpetrator.
"The longer and more brutal the Russian attack on Ukraine lasts, the greater the risk of such unrestrained attacks," Strack-Zimmermann told RND of the Nord Stream incident, adding: "It cannot be ruled out that they will be directed by Russia in order to shake our markets."
In separate comments to RND, Kiesewetter said: "It is likely that Russia is trying in this way, on the one hand, to stir up uncertainty among the European population and, on the other hand, to once again point out at the state level the possibility of an attack on critical infrastructure."
He added: "Such an act of sabotage would also fit with Russia's state-terrorism and hybrid approach."
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that claims of Russian involvement in the Nord Stream incident were "predictably stupid and absurd," per Kommersant, the Russian newspaper.

Europe, which was heavily reliant on Russian natural-gas imports before Russia invaded Ukraine, is already in the grips of an energy crisis. The damage to the Nord Stream pipelines, and threats by Gazprom, the Kremlin-owned natural-gas giant, to end supplies to Europe through Ukraine, are deepening the crisis as winter approaches and demand for energy rises.
On Monday, Danish and Swedish authorities detected three severe leaks affecting the four Nord Stream pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, Nord Stream was intended as the main artery for natural-gas exports from Russia to Europe.
/sarcasm
Total bullshit.
“...hreats by Gazprom, the Kremlin-owned natural-gas giant, to end supplies to Europe through Ukraine...”

Which makes it leverage, and a negotiating tool even in war-time, as well as a source of income. Perhaps it was some part of Russia or actor within that wants Russia out of the war and they think this would help, but it makes no sense for Putin to want to lose that leverage and income. I know people are going to say I’m a Putin apologist or a bot or whatever, but I need someone to explain the logic behind that.
Yeah...as has been stated why not just shut it off?
MSN is highly regarded for accuracy and unbiased reporting, so…
Exactly. Or as somebody else said, when I go to bed at night and want to turn out the light, I always take an axe through the wall to chop up the electrical lines.
I don’t understand. Why would Russia, Who can just turn off the spigot blow up their own pipeline?
Assuming a peace deal is reached, they could instantly turn the spigot back on and start the revenue stream.
I could easily see a third party, China or Iran (even Ukraine) as having more incentive to do this.
Given what Poland said (Thank You, USA!), I guess it went like this:
Russia asked the US to destroy the pipelines, and the US complied.
Yep...sure.
Joe Biden said in February that the US would take out the gas lines. There is no “actors” or other countries in this. The US did this. Joe told us we would do this. It’s done. Russia was negotiating with Europe on the gas, and the US made sure Russia could not deliver. Simple as that.
Stupid German government. They shut the nukes down because Nukes are yuky and scary. Now they are cold.
It is rare that green idiots get such an awesome object lesson.
Uhh look a little closer to home.
Look at what happened in the Swedish election. Look at what happened in the Italian election. Now the option of caving in to get the gas flowing through the pipeline again - quickly - is off the table for German voters no matter how bad it gets this Winter.
Who would have an incentive to take that option off the table? The answer is obvious.
Why would Putin sabotage his own source of revenue? The accusations make no sense at all.

How the 1999 Russian apartment bombings led to Putin's rise to power
Satter: In the summer of 1999 the approval rating of former President Yeltsin was 2%. There appeared to be no chance whatever that Putin, who was designated by Yeltsin as his successor could possibly become the next Russian president. The apartment bombings changed everything. It was said after those buildings went up that now we're living in a completely different country.
More than 200 people were killed in the September bombings. Russia blamed Chechen militants, triggering the second Chechen War.
Satter: Putin came forward as the savior of the country. He was put in charge of a war in Chechnya. The bombings were blamed on Chechens without any evidence whatsoever, and as a result of the successful prosecution of that war, against all odds he was elected the next Russian president. The apartment bombings appear to be the keystone of a plot to confuse Russian public opinion, to create terror, to distract the Russian public, to redirect their anger away from the corruption that had flourished under Yeltsin, and toward the Chechens who had had for a number of years a semi-independent government in Chechnya and in that way create the conditions for the Russian people to vote in what they absolutely consciously did not want, which was a successor to Yeltsin who would protect Yeltsin.
There was an enormous amount of material in the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta which pointed to the possibility and in fact to the likelihood that the authorities themselves blew up those buildings. At the same time a fifth bomb was discovered in the basement of an apartment building in Ryazan, which is a city southeast of Moscow. And I went to Ryazan after the bomb was discovered and diffused to talk to local residents and it was clear from those conversations that what took place was a genuine attempt to blow up a fifth building. The authorities said that this was only a training exercise, but it was nothing of the kind.
And what was most important was that three persons were arrested for putting a bomb in a building in Ryazan. They turned out to be not Chechens, not terrorists in the usual sense, but rather agents of the Federal Securities Service which is the FSB.

Why would Putin destroy his major source of revenue?
L
Riiiight… because Putin wouldn’t want to bribe the Germans with oil so after he shut off the pipes he blew them up on Germanys side to…ensure he couldn’t sell them anymore oil.
All Puty-puts fault.
(It was either the Germans or the US… maybe China… but my money is on the first two)
It makes even less sense because of Biden’s clear threat back last spring.
