However, what they gave up to Ukraine was done so because they wanted to secure the large amount they still control for the referendums, currently being voted upon, to make that part of Russia, again.
Now, everyone can claim that these referendums are a sham. However, the goal that Russia is working towards is to make it Russian land, even if only in their eyes.
Why you ask? The reason is that if Russia sees these lands as part of Russia, they can now change the landscape in several ways. The main aspect is that Russia is now protecting its own land. He is doing so to dare the U.S. & NATO from engaging with military personnel, not just arms & money. Will that happen? I think Putin is quite confident that they will not.
BTW, the reports I am hearing is that the vote is overwhelmingly tilted to yes winning.
