I think its more than that. Europe is energy poor. Russia has what they need and want. They may be the most energy rich nation on the planet.

What has been shown is that the strings attached to the Russian gas and oil are unacceptable.
Just across the Mediterranean is the untold energy in the GCC states. Russia is in Syria sole to prevent the proposed pipelines across that desert nothingness to Europe. Now that Russia is getting it’s ass kicked, the pipelines can be completed and Russia is left holding an empty bag.
