Jan. 6 committee announces date for next hearing, says it may be the final one (next Wed)

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol will hold its ninth hearing next week, and it will likely be the panel’s last before releasing its final report by the end of the year.

The Jan. 6 committee will reconvene publicly at 1 p.m. EDT on Sept. 28 and is expected to feature “substantial footage” of the Capitol riot and “significant witness testimony” that has not been previously seen, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said on Tuesday. The hearing comes as the panel is racing to finalize its report on its yearlong investigation into the events leading up to the attack on the Capitol.

A man indicted on six federal charges in the US for his involvement in the Capitol riots on January 6 was paid thousands of dollars from the ABC for his footage of the siege.
Remittance advice from the national broadcaster shows taxpayers spent $2375 to buy footage from disgraced Capitol Hill rioter and anti-Trump activist John Sullivan.
Sullivan was captured on camera encouraging rioters to “we gotta get this s—t burned.”

Sky News host Andrew Bolt said there were “very serious questions” for the ABC after the documents revealled the public broadcaster paid Mr Sullivan after he was charged...

The ABC’s flagship current affairs program Four Corners last week ran a report on protesters rioting at the US Capitol.
“The reporter, Sarah Ferguson, was clear that this was all the work of wicked right wingers,” Mr Bolt said.
Mr Bolt approached the ABC to respond on the issue, but the public broadcaster has not replied.

The ABC was not alone in bankrolling the rioter with US media companies CNN and NBC paying $35,000 for the footage.

At the Senate Estimates hearing on 27 March this year, the ABC was asked

who authorised the $2,500 USD payment to Sullivan for his video tape
whether the ABC was aware of his criminal role in the riots at the time payment was made; and
who liaised with Sullivan over the payments.

Here’s the ABC’s considered written answer, published today:

The focus of the program was legitimately on the overwhelming majority of participants in the riot who were supporters of President Trump and supporters of far-right organisations. As stated in a response to a separate question on notice, Mr Sullivan was not interviewed.

An ABC archive producer contacted Mr Sullivan at the request of a Four Corners’ producer to source the vision. The payment was approved by the program’s Executive Producer. The program was aware of Mr Sullivan’s role in the riot. It was the fact that he was in the midst of it and captured the fatal shooting that made his footage critical to the program...

His name made headlines after he appeared on CNN to chat with Anderson Cooper regarding the video he captured of Ashli Babbitt being shot by Capitol police...
Sullivan claimed to be a video journalist, but after his arrest, he apparently admitted to the FBI that he does not have press credentials, according to an arrest affidavit.
He allegedly told rioters, “We gotta get this s**t burned,” and “it’s our house motherf***er.”

In another video he allegedly tells rioters, “Let’s go! This s**t’s ours. F**k yeah… We accomplished this s**t. We did this s**t together!.. We’re all part of this history.”...

Four Trump supporters died and were identified as Ashli Babbitt, 35, who was shot dead in the Capitol building, while Roseanne Boyland, 34, Kevin Greeson, 55, and Benjamin Phillips, 50, died after suffering “medical emergencies.”
Capitol officer Brian D. Sicknick died of natural causes a day after defending the Capitol.
Sicknick died from strokes, the chief medical examiner’s office said, citing “acute brainstem and cerebellar infarcts due to acute basilar artery thrombosis.”
