Until now, all men who have sex with men have been required to undergo a three-month celibate waiting period before donating. Starting Sept. 11, Canadian Blood Services will screen donors based on sexual behaviour rather than sexual orientation. Under the new rules, all donors, regardless of gender, will be asked whether they've engaged in anal sex with new and/or multiple partners within the previous three months.

Window period of infection is 12-14 days during which an infection is not detectable by even the highly sensitive testing done by donation sites. That's an awfully large window for an infection to slip through.
Other FReepers have commented on this subject. How much more blood do they think they’ll collect from lest than 2% of the population, the vast majority of whom won’t be qualified by these new requirements because they had 10 partners in the past week, or are HIV infected themselves?

I was an RN. If they were gay that had one form of sexuality transmitted disease or another. It was usually not mentioned unless that was the diagnosis but it could be found in their chart.
Hep B, HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, you name it they had one or another and they were always still sexually active. Many single and when they had a partner sometimes that guy didn’t know it, we were asked to keep quiet about it.

I once went into anaphylactic shock during a platelet transfusion. I had many transfusions before that one and never had an issue. It was one of the most frightening things I experienced. Hives, then throat closed up, and bp dropped. 4 Benadryl injections, steroid injections , And almost intubated.
They investigated and said sometimes they mix different donors blood products together so they could not tell what occurred. It was ‘A bad batch’

I don’t know if they still exist, but there used to be entire websites with nothing but x-rays, scans and anecdotes featuring the various foreign objects stuck in patients’ rectums and penises and their stories of how they got there. Most but not all of them were homosexuals. Honestly, it sometimes seems that “hypersexual” would be a more accurate term than “homosexual.”

Back in the late 1970s-early 80s when AIDS was a new thing I remember hearing an interview of a homosexual activist who encouraged other fags to donate blood. He reasoned that research would only be funded if the disease threatened straights.
If we'd forcibly quarantined all homosexuals back then, AIDS in America would be just a footnote in medical journals.
My HIV’s premature aging warning: HIV-infection causes premature aging of 14 years. This happens even if treated with antiretrovirals. One would think that Canadians would be wary of aberrant sexual practitioners since Bill Clinton allowed the blood from prisoners to be used on hemophiliacs back before he became President.
