Russia sees spike in Google searches for 'How to leave Russia'

In the hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin was expected to address the nation regarding plans to conduct “referendums” in Ukraine’s occupied territories Tuesday, searches for the phrase “How to leave Russia” spiked on Google. The surge was noted by the Telegram channel Mozhem Obyasnit, though it’s available for all to see on Google Trends. The phrase’s popularity appears to have peaked at about 6:00 pm Moscow time.

Earlier Tuesday, Russian lawmakers unanimously passed legislation introducing the concepts of "mobilization" and "martial law" to the criminal code. That, combined with Russian-installed officials in Ukraine's occupied territories calling for "referendums" on annexation on September 23–27, has led to widespread speculation that Putin will soon announce a general mobilization.

Looking at comments since yesterday, a history lesson is in order:

• During Vietnam, 25% of those who served and 30% of those killed were draftees. That means 75% of those who served and 70% of those who died were volunteers.
• It is estimated 570,000 dodged the draft from 1964 to 1973, nine years. They didn't all run to the border right after the draft was announced.
• US forces started drawing down in 1970 to a few marines on embassy guard duty
• After the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 it the US congress that cut funding to South Vietnam, which fell in 1975.
• South Vietnam was increasing its share of the fighting as US forces drew down and held out for two years after the US government abandoned them.
• It was the US Congress who lost the war the US military had largely won.

So why would Russians search on "how to leave Russia" before Putin gave his address, after his government spent months saying there would be no mobilization and everything was fine? Why would so many protest and cause miles long pileups on the border? As bad as our government is, the Russian government is much worse.

Even though it's accessible in Russia, Google usage is small in comparison to that of Russia's homegrown search engine Yandex.

Similar to Google, Yandex offers a ton of other services including cloud storage, email, music streaming, online payments, maps, news aggregation, and more.

I have met very wealthy, and political Russian families in the MV area several times.

I haven’t been able to find it Open Source (probably never will), but a good friend of mine at Marine Corp Intel had an actual geo-tagged and AOR orientation blow up of Putin and his FSB Wagner Chief not only there, but much further South at the Coney Island Boardwalk, eating icecream, and absolutely surrounded and “skinned” by college girls.

Had a couple shot’s of Putin being very cozy with some prepubescent boys in I believe Brazil as well, again geo’s and cardinal orientation stamped.

More 80% of the population supports Putin. There were less than a thousand people protesting in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There were more people protesting in DC on J6, by far, than are protesting Russia now.

Contrary to free republic Zelenskyy supporters this war is actually pretty popular in Russia because they favor incorporation of the breakaways and don’t like NATO and conversely I think the war is fairly popular in Ukraine too and so far as don’t give Putin what he wants

I think both of those statements are fair representation Putin also enjoys very high approval ratings again contrary to the conventional wisdom here of the Zolinski supporting crowd
