Fuel cells are a much better alternative. I have even heard of fuel cells that use gasoline and even urea to power the vehicle.
Fuel cells are problematic. Hydrogen creation for fuel cells create lots of CO2, a no-no for greenies. A lot of energy goes into creating the hydrogen, that energy produced by coal and other non-green sources. Also, lots of platinum, nickel and other metal ores must be mined for fuel cells, another big problem. The energy provided by fuel cells is less efficient than the batteries in EV's. I have experimented with fuel cells and find them lacking.
Sounds like a piss poor alternative to me.
