OAKLAND - There are few sights more poignant than empty classrooms that should be full, playground basketball courts with no games, a "School Crossing" sign where there is no longer a school. Just breeze-block walls and nearly 100 years of history.
Parker Elementary School, in the words of the Oakland Unified School District, was "unsustainable," no longer a place that drew enough children from a viable surrounding neighborhood to fill its now-dim classrooms and a dark gymnasium that had doubled as the school cafeteria. So it was shuttered last spring.

Foster navigated the city's volatile politics skillfully for three years, focusing on poverty, in particular, as an obstacle to education. Then, in 1973, Foster was shot eight times, dying as he departed a school board meeting.
The killing was claimed by the Symbionese Liberation Army, the group that later kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst. The group's given reason was that Foster's request that students get identification cards was "fascist."
This is a long article but it covers a lot of interesting aspects of liberal politics causing negative results. I had forgotten about the assassination of the Oakland school board president. Wonder if Merrick Garland would call this disruption of a school board meeting domestic terrorism?

Schools’ capacities had to increase after WWII and the Baby Boom. Then there were the children of the Baby Boomers. But lately the birthrate has dropped school districts have more classrooms and schools than they need. It makes sense to close the oldest schools and use the newer ones.
The Oakland School District is corrupt to the core. They have wasted tens of millions on payouts - see the civil grand jury report from 2018.
They fill the empty classrooms with new immigrants and union teachers can go on strike demanding better pay to teach them.
The real issue here is not specifically about black people being priced out of Oakland - it’s about the middle class in general being priced out of California’s coastal regions. Unless you’re either quite wealthy or homeless-level poor (and therefore eligible for extensive government handouts), you increasingly can’t afford to live on the California coast.
If White people leave a city, it is called “White Flight” and it is racist. If White people move into a city it is called “Gentrification” and that is also racist.
Let’s just make it simple, If you’re white, you’re racist.
That’s what CRT is all about.
Oakland is a dead city, not unlike so many others where Democrats have failed.
New immigrants, even illegal aliens, of whatever kind, are far better students than the inner city native sort. I have that from a couple of public school teachers.
Central Americans generally behave in class and follow instructions as best they can, and are respectful of authority. They arent usually very bright though.

The last time I was in Oakland a decade ago I was convinced that Asians would essentially take control of the city from Blacks. The reason being the affluent blacks had moved to San Leandro and El Cerrito, and the poorer blacks were not increasing in numbers. This is new data:
Asian population in Oakland are 61,929; 14.3 percent are Asians, out of these 5,731 are Asian Indians, 30,635 are Chinese, 7,160 are Filipinos, 1,608 are Japanese, 3,181 are Korean, 5,055 are Vietnamese and 8,559 are other Asian nationals.
Hispanic Population Hispanic population in Oakland, California are 116,111.

Same thing happening in Chicago area where at one school the admin/student ratio is 1:1. Should be closing but teacher’s union agreement requires them to stay open.

Even while Oakland was seeing an overall influx of residents in the 2010s, the Black population was declining rapidly, continuing a 40-year fall. Black residents currently make up just 20% of Oakland’s population, down from 47% in 1980.
The largest Oakland racial/ethnic groups are: White (28.5%) followed by Hispanic (27.0%) and Black (22.2%).
