Oxford malaria vaccine data bodes well for effort to combat deadly disease

Encouraging new data on a malaria vaccine from Oxford University bodes well for global effort to combat the mosquito-borne disease that kills a child every minute, its makers said on Wednesday.

After decades of work, the only approved malaria vaccine, Mosquirix, made by British drugmaker GSK, was recently endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Oxford’s vaccine, called R21/Matrix-M, is likely more effective than Mosquirix in preventing the disease that kills about 600,000 a year despite roughly US$3 billion spent annually on insecticides, bednets and anti-malarial drugs, Oxford scientist Adrian Hill said.

When I was working in SA, ( Amazon) the very old and young were dying of malaria. That said, after the Covid vax hoax and severe side effects, who in their right mind would ever take a vax again?

I think it kills nearly half a million a year in Africa.

Yes, and it was effective at saving millions of lives....which is the real reason it was banned.

"Silent Spring" was a LIE! There were no "thinner egg shells".

The U.S. is the only place that over used the pesticide to the point of contaminating the runoff from farm land.

But in the third world where the disease was a deadly problem, there was no over use.

As for the supposed health effects on humans, my dad used to fog the yard with DDT and as we lived among many farm fields we thought it was funny when the crop dusters would occasionally spray us as we walked on adjacent roads.

I used to tell my students when the history books mentioned ‘Silent Spring’ about the California professor who ate a pound of DDT to prove how safe it was. The kids would ask, “What happened to him?”

“He died”, I’d answer. “Thirty years later when he was climbing a mountain while in his 80s.”
