In a pine forest at the edge of Izyum the stench of death filled the air as a mass exhumation got under way.
The earth is giving up its secrets. Ukrainian officials believe war crimes have been committed, which they are determined to document.
Around 100 Ukrainian emergency service workers wearing blue plastic coverings dug into the earth, opening makeshift graves.
They are trying to establish the cause of death of hundreds of people buried in a forest at the edge of the city, recently liberated by advancing Ukrainian forces.
Izyum, invaded in April, was used by Russia as a key military hub to supply its forces from the east.
The exhumation was conducted mostly in silence, as police and prosecutors looked on. One officer put his head in his hands. Another walked away.
Kharkiv regional prosecutor Olexander Ilyenkov says there is no doubt war crimes have been committed here.
"In the first grave, there is a civilian who has a rope over her neck. So we see the traces of torture," he told the BBC.
He said almost everyone died because of Russian soldiers.
"Some of them were killed, some were tortured, some were killed because of Russian Federation air and artillery strikes."
(snip)
Ukrainian police say there are 445 new graves at the site, but some contain more than one body. It's unclear how all of them died. Many are said to be civilians, women and children among them.

Of course there are some. I'm pretty sure of it. Well, somewhat sure. Let me look at the maps to see what parts of Russia that Ukraine has occupied. I'll get back to you.
What was Russia supposed to do with all the dead Ukrainian soldiers? Let them rot in the town square? I’m pretty sure the majority of the bodies will have a Ukrainian uniform on. That’s why they say “War is Hell,” FFS!
Imagine that, people killed in a war.
Too bad the Ukrainians wouldn’t take up the Russian offer to have the bodies of their soldiers returned...but then again, that fits the pattern.
Some of the graves had children.
While Kherson and the West bank of the Dniepr are being secured, it looks like the next big offensive would be to come South out of Zaporizhzhia to Melitopol to cut the Russian forces in 1/2 and then take out the Kerch Bridges with ATACMS.
This is just too obvious for them not to do it.
Based on the Thousands of People in Melitipol that were in the streets protesting at the begining of the war, and the lack of protesters now, I’m guessing they will find some bodies, there.
They look like they really want to be in that photo.
“Some of the graves had children.”
Human shields also get killed in war.
Deception is a major part of war.
“Too bad the Ukrainians wouldn’t take up the Russian offer to have the bodies of their soldiers returned..”
Well, at least you are admitting that there were Ukrainians in the graves, though you claim they were all “soldiers.” However, the investigation identifies women and children in the graves, as well as men. Are you dismissing that? Or, are you claiming that those were the bodies of soldiers, as well?
“Human shields also get killed in war.”
Ah, so now the dead were “human shields?”
Is there anything for which you’d be critical of Russia in this war? Besides, perhaps, for not using nukes?

The one thing that may make Moscow understand their Favorite Russian Beach Resort Changes Ownership.
Due to Sanctions, it isn't like they will be going to a European Beach resort any time soon.
The "Top 10% Class" in Russia are the ones that will end this war. The Yee Haw Bubba Class and The Poors are in it for the Nationalism and the Money, respectively. They'll fight to the Last Poor.

It was nice someone took time to bury the dead… so there’s that.
Well that is more of a plus than many might realize. So yes that they buried them is a good thing.
Agree 💯
“Is there anything for which you’d be critical of Russia in this war?”
Taking their sweet little time in liberating Ukraine, although I am better understanding that strategy now, as the US is now drawing from supplies that our military was counting on, should it get in combat in other areas of the world.
The Russians are simply DISARMING the West at this point.
So, Russians buried their victims this time, Hooray!
