On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher stated that while some conservatives do want to whitewash the past, “plenty of liberals also want to abuse history to control the present,” through presentism and acting as through “the capacity for cruelty” is “a white thing.”
Maher began by saying, “How we teach our kids history has become a big controversy these days, with liberals accusing conservatives of wanting to whitewash the past, and sometimes that’s true, sometimes they do. But plenty of liberals also want to abuse history to control the present, and last month, a scholar named James Sweet caught hell for calling them out for doing just that. He criticized the phenomenon known as ‘presentism,’ which means judging everyone in the past by the standards of the present. It’s the belief that people who lived 100 or 500 or 1,000 years ago really should have known better, which is so stupid. It’s like getting mad at yourself for not knowing what you know now when you were ten.”

He sure is. Thanks for posting this. Some conservatives would rather bash Maher because of his leftist past than applaud him for his current, sensible stances.
That is, I think, a mistake. Maher is reaching an audience that otherwise wouldn’t be reached. So instead of bashing him, we should be quoting him to our liberal acquaintances. “Even Bill Maher says...”
Maher ain’t stupid. His leftist schtick has grown stale and he’s going where the viewers are.
If Biden gets re-elected, I might even volunteer.

Mahr was on Joe Rogans podcast a while back and he behaved for around 25 minutes but when the discussion turned to climate change it took him about 30 seconds to start trashing Republicans. That was all I could stand of that bullshit.
He’s a POS liberal to the core as far as I’m concerned and the fact that he’s actually speaking the truth once in a while now doesn’t cut any ice with me.

Wonder if he knows the City of Pittsburgh removed a statue honoring their native son, and an American history icon— songwriter Stephen Foster!
Remove Stephen Foster—who was an early progressive in the 1840s and 50s- over social issues (slavery, poverty). This is how one knows the removal of history is not based on any verifiable facts— but the means of pulling out the societal underpinnings of a free Constitutional USA. IOW pure Marxism.
Not so sure Attila the Hun or Roman’s would agree ?.

Maher started his career with a show called “Polically Incorrect”. Sounds like he’s returning to his roots.

Whatever past atrocities whites committed, other races did that and worse. But whites on the other hand have contributed 90% of what we call “civilization”.
So, yes I’m proud of my race, and they can take their accusation of white privilege and shove it.
