Little do people know that this administration has tried to avert total disaster amid a rail strike set to effect Friday at midnight. Thirty percent of the nation’s freight would be shuttered, and the cost per day to the US economy will be around $2 billion. Most passenger and commuter rail services will also cease operating. Ten of the twelve major railway unions have agreed to the new agreements, though the two largest, which represent engineers and conductors, has not signed off. They still have lingering questions about sick leave and penalties for missing work. Thus far, these two are holding their ground, while the other ten unions said they would also strike in solidarity.
As Spencer wrote, the Biden White House has been trying to overcome these negotiation roadblocks since the spring.

Unions, and particularly railroad unions, are solid Democrat through and through. Why would they want to sabotage their bread-and-butter Party right before an election? It makes ZERO sense.
My bet is that the strike will be averted right before midnight on Friday, Biden will claim victory for it, and the fawning media will trumpet his praises.
BINGO!
Master Negotiator Biden averts nationwide tragedy!
I can’t imagine McConnell decimating anyone about anything. He’s too busy CYA’g to keep his freaking job.
I agree. Does anyone know what the sick leave policy is for these unions?
No doubt in my mind that you are right.
“My bet is that the strike will be averted right before midnight on Friday, Biden will claim victory for it, and the fawning media will trumpet his praises.”
You are very prescient.
Lots of the rank and file are already blaming all this on Republican intransigence going back before Amtrak Joe. They are in the drivers' seat this time, and the railroads' roughshod "point systems" and such have the lads and lasses all righteously angry. Wall Street is being blamed, and the RR boards eager to burn everything down to make returns on vulture capitalists are getting bad optics.
Call it "Hunter Harrison's Ghost" or whatever, but chickens are roosting, and Amtrak Joe will benefit somehow. He can treat an individual Amtrak employee like dog crap, but the unions love him. Look for nationalization... they have plans in place and they never let a crisis go to waste... especially a crisis that has been manufactured.
Bet the farm. The Union won’t cripple the country this close to the mid terms. Instead they will give Biden a victory and save the nation just in time.
It’s certain that the unions are in on this with the Dems. They’ve been discussing this strategy since the Spring, and have been keeping it under wraps, waiting for just this purpose at the opportune time.
Post of the freaking day! You couldn’t be more correct.
You are probably correct.
So union members get huge raises, Biden looks like a comic book hero and the people pay big price increases to take care of it all. Sounds like the usual play.
Inflation to go up again.
Person at home: I’m getting used to store brand corn flakes with water for lunch and peanut butter on crackers for supper.
I heard gas was down 35% after being up 190% so I feel good about voting straight Democrat again. Before they repossessed my car I would driven right down to that polling place but now I see they’re mailing ballots. I may walk to White Castle and have one slider to celebrate the Dem victory.
Should be "returns FOR vulture capitalists."
who woke mc turtle up, go back to sleep useless
Railroads are not allowed to strike more than 24 hours.
Gas in my neck-o-the-woods is about $1 higher than at the end of Trump’s term. If I averaged the price curve, it’s been $1.75 higher under Biden.
I agree. Does anyone know what the sick leave policy is for these unions?
Most union workers have no sick days. They traded them off years ago for long-term disability benefits. One must be off 2-weeks before that takes effect, though. Which is the downside because the company knows most people going out sick will return under 14-days. There is no compensation for those who will only be out, say, because of a bad flu. And in actuality, the long-term benefits go for 6 months, then another 6 months but at a reduced rate. After the year, one should be back to work or on permanent disability.
I know, I’ve been through it.
I don’t know a lot about this, but my understanding this is mostly about sick time. My understanding is if you call in sick too much, you get fired. BNSF(?) has a 30 point system.
one sick call can cost you several points.
I fail to understand why they want a violently ill person controlling an assembled machine(locomotives with cars) weighing hundreds’s of thousands of tons at speeds of 55 MPH or more. But they do.
Schedules must be met.
Shades of Harry Truman.
Good grief who talked them into that? Long term disability insurance is pretty cheap or at least it used to be.
