The White House's 'Contingency Plan' for a Rail Strike Doesn't Sound Like a Plan

In Tuesday's White House press briefing, Karine Jean-Pierre failed to provide much reassurance for American citizens or businesses eyeing the looming threat of a rail worker strike that is shaping up to be something of a repeat of the Biden administration's previous mismanagement of U.S. port backlogs and infant formula shortages.

As Vespa explained on Tuesday morning, potential rail disruption is "another looming economic crisis that could strike hard this week," one that "could cost the US economy billions and disrupt virtually all commercial and passenger traffic."

So what does the White House have to say about the situation? Well, according to Biden's press secretary, they're working on it, and have been for months, and the most they have to show is a contingency plan that Jean-Pierre mentioned without any concrete details.

So, they think they can just offload rail loads onto TRUCKS?

If there is a strike, it'll be a dress rehearsal for Armageddon. There is SO much stuff that goes on rail that is mission-critical for our economy. Crude oil shipments to refineries (that SHOULD be in pipelines) will stop. Guess what? Those trucks they think they'll use run on diesel. No diesel, no trucks.

I've raised 6-year-olds with more savvy than this lot.

So what does the White House have to say about the situation?

Privately?

"Can we blame Trump?"
"How can we fault the Republicans?"
"How can we manipulate this 'crisis' to make the administration appear to save the day?"

Not normally a union guy, but a rail strike would cripple the economy and make the Dems look bad.

So, bring it on!

Why would union workers go on strike now when it would impact the election which they want Democrats to win?

Sounds right. What they are not doing is finding a way to avert the crises. Why would they? every crises is an opportunity. The more the misery the more potential to exploit it.

Union workers have one chance to negotiate a contract—they don’t get to pick the timing—and they know that with current inflation they are about to get boned.

Heard something on this yesterday and the numbers (unacceptable to the union) were astounding. Something like 24% pay and benefits. Correct me if wrong.

Were there any "looming economic crises" during the Trump administration?

I don't remember any.
But then again, I am sometimes forgetful.
