Turkey says Greek coast guard fires on cargo ship in Aegean

Greek coast guard ships opened fire on a cargo vessel sailing in international waters in the Aegean Sea, the Turkish coast guard said, escalating tensions between the regional rivals that have mounted in recent weeks.

There were no casualties in the shooting 11 nautical miles (13 miles) southwest of the Turkish island of Bozcaada on Saturday, the Turkish statement said. It added that after “harassment fire” from two Greek coast guard vessels, two Turkish coast guard ships went to the area and the Greek boats left.

Calls to the Greek Embassy in Ankara went unanswered Sunday, and it wasn't clear why the gunfire occurred.

The neighboring countries have been embroiled in disputes for decades and frictions have ratcheted up in recent weeks, with both sides alleging airspace violations. Greek officials have raised concerns about another outbreak of conflict in Europe, following Russia's war in Ukraine.

Maybe Turkey trying to ship a cargo of “refugees” to Greece. Wouldn’t be surprised.

Quick. Send a team of diplomats to stop all negotiations. Send both sides $3 Billion each, for starters. The show (i.e. war) must go on. We can fight a multi-front, cash-burning scheme. No problem at all.

Also, since we haven’t given away all of our military weapons yet, with our donations to the Taliban and Ukraine, we can also send plenty of weapons to Turkey and Greece. Easy peezy.

The Turks (Ottomans) are the idiots who blew up the Parthenon.

Yes nothing new here and it flares up periodically. But firing on a cargo vessel? There must be more to the story.

There usually is. Turkey could just be making it up.

If a Greek vessel fired on a Turkish vessel, and Turkish Coast Guard vessels came to the rescue, the Turkish vessels would have fired on the Greek vessel. Since there is no mention of that, I am inclined towards thinking this may be made up. But, who knows?

Not this side of the second coming!
As long as muslims are in power in Turkey they’ll keep at each other.

Actually it was the Venetians who blew up the Parthenon--but it blew up because the Turks were storing ammunition in it.

Bozcaada is the island of Tenedos, just off the coast of the Troad. Tenedos and Imbros are both near the entrance to the Dardanelles (Hellespont) and belong to Turkey whereas nearly all the other islands in the Aegean are Greek.

And ironic that both are fellow NATO members, which begs the question: If one attacks the other, on whose side will the other NATO countries be?

They’ll respond as they did back in the mid-1970s when Turkey and Greece squared off over Cyprus: They will try to broker a cease fire and resolution.
