NEW YORK (AP) — Americans are remembering 9/11 with moments of silence, readings of victims’ names, volunteer work and other tributes 21 years after the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.
Victims’ relatives and dignitaries will convene Sunday at the places where hijacked jets crashed on Sept. 11, 2001 — the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
Other communities around the country are marking the day with candlelight vigils, interfaith services and other commemorations. Some Americans are joining in volunteer projects on a day that is federally recognized as both Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
The observances follow a fraught milestone anniversary last year. It came weeks after the chaotic and humbling end of the Afghanistan war that the U.S. launched in response to the attacks.
But if this Sept. 11 may be less of an inflection point, it remains a point for reflection on the attack that killed nearly 3,000 people, spurred a U.S. “war on terror” worldwide and reconfigured national security policy.
It also stirred — for a time — a sense of national pride and unity for many, while subjecting Muslim Americans to years of suspicion and bigotry and engendering debate over the balance between safety and civil liberties. In ways both subtle and plain, the aftermath of 9/11 ripples through American politics and public life to this day.
And the attacks have cast a long shadow into the personal lives of thousands of people who survived, responded or lost loved ones, friends and colleagues.

US marks 21st anniversary of 9/11 terror attacks
Two of these things currently represent a greater terror threat to our Republic than 9/11 ever did.
I haven’t
Kinda seems that way doesn’t it.
until the dims politicized this like they do everything...
while subjecting Muslim Americans to years of suspicion and bigotry and engendering debate over the balance between safety and civil liberties.
Because Islam is incompatible with Western civilization as evidenced by 9/11 and history.
I haven’t. I was also appalled by GWB’s about face after 20 years and how a muzzie was able to vandalize a memorial and continue to breathe my air.
A lot less going on here than there used to be, though.
Well, I don’t forget. I went up to the top of the World Trade Center twelve years earlier and as a result felt very frightened by what happened (did not have a decent night’s sleep for the next three days or so). And was very saddened when I found out that BKO was on the flight that crashed into the Pentagon.
Tragically, 911 was a sucker punch but the current actions of the DoJ/FBI are a terminal cancer.
I think the Queens death and all that’s happening there now is taking up the news cycles.
That said, I don't retell it every day. Just like I don't retell the story of my wedding day or my childrens' births, every day.
There is a difference between periodicy and intensity. Just because people aren't revisiting 9/11 daily doesn't mean it's been forgotten.
Our POLITICIANS have wanted to ‘forget’ it - about 5 minutes after it happened..
How long did they pander to us before giving the O.K. to put up a Mosque near the site? That’s akin to allowing Nazis to put up a memorial to THEIR cause back in the early 50’s.
But, again, our politicians are fine with it..
