So what can explain the depth of feeling, the palpable sense of loss and regret, in this superpower ex-British colony across the Atlantic at the death of Queen Elizabeth II?
Familiarity has something to do with it. Like most Britons, the great majority of Americans have never known any other British monarch; Elizabeth had met on equal footing with every president since Harry Truman.
Fame, and its cousin celebrity, is a factor as well: Her birth was news during the Coolidge administration; and when, in the middle of the Great Depression, her uncle King Edward VIII abdicated to marry an American, 10-year-old Princess Elizabeth suddenly found herself heir to the throne of the British Empire.
Mention “the British Empire” today and historical arguments ensue. Mention “the queen” and everybody over here knows who you mean.

I’ve always thought that Elizabeth was a perfect example of the old saying that ‘God fits the back to the burden’.
We’re probably coming up on tumultuous times, and maybe Charles will prove all of his critics wrong.
Why do Americans mourn Queen Elizabeth ll?
My guess is we are not mourning the death of a queen so much as we are mourning the death of world leader who led a long and honorable life and unshelfessly served her nation for almost 3/4 of a century.

I know folks in the UK are mourning. The UK is one of those countries that usually has our back. I feel for them.
Yes, There really is a special relationship.
Elizabeth had her mother, The queen mother,
helping her for the first 50 years of her reign.
I bet Charles wishes he had someone like that helping him now.
He has been in training for over 50 years.
Maybe that will help, but he needs wisdom.
I think it would be hard to get rid of the monarchy
without getting rid of the House of Lords too.

I looked up the House of Lords on Wikipedia.
Yeah I know it’s Wikipedia, but still.
I didn’t realize the House of Lords was so complicated.
It shows the number of seats in the House of Lords is 756.
And it’s not just a bunch of Earls and Dukes.
It’s a whole bunch of other people too.
He’s about 73 years old, and has lived at the center of the Monarchy all his life! He also had the most experienced head of state in the world training him.
If he doesn’t have ‘wisdom’ yet, I’m not sure how he’ll get it :-)
I feel much the same way. I am not much interested in monarchies, but the woman was measured, dignified, and eminently sober and devoted to her position.
I respect that. I wish we had some of that.
I was a bit taken aback by the outpouring for Diana, and didn’t get it at all. There seemed to be something more about it that to me just didn’t seem right.
But that’s me. People deal with stuff in different ways, and the reaction to royalty is a matter of curiousity to me. It isn’t me, but I find it interesting to observe in others.

SETTING: In the terrain somewhere near Balmoral Castle. Queen Elizabeth is hiking with a male staffer or acquaintance. They encounter two American hikers, a man and woman.
QUEEN ELIZABETH: (politely) Good day.
AMERICAN WOMAN (enthusiastically) Hello! Nice day!
QUEEN ELIZABETH: Where are you from?
AMERICAN MAN: We're Americans! How about you, where are you from?
QUEEN ELIZABETH: We're from London.
AMERICAN WOMAN Ah! Have you ever been here before?
QUEEN ELIZABETH: Oh yes. I have been coming here for eighty years, since I was a little girl.
AMERICAN WOMAN You've been here that many times? You must have met the Queen then! (neither of the Americans have any idea she is the Queen)
QUEEN ELIZABETH: (wryly) No, I have never met the Queen! (turns to her companion) Have you ever ever met the Queen? What's she like?
BRITISH MAN WITH QUEEN: (seriously) Well, I understand she can be very cantankerous, but is a lovely person.
AMERICAN WOMAN Oh!
BRITISH MAN WITH QUEEN: (reaches for the American man's camera, looks at the Queen) Here! Why don't I take a picture of you with these lovely people for their vacation!
QUEEN ELIZABETH: Of course. (squeezes in betwen the American tourists and poses)
BRITISH MAN WITH QUEEN: (as he and the Queen walk away, says to her) I sure would like to be a fly on the wall when they get back home and show those pictures to their friends!

Sigh...I wish I had heard the story more accurately, it was much better in the actual telling!
Yes. The Brits are mourning their loss and I think we sense their sorrow and thus respect their time of mourning....something most people are familiar with that grief.
I respect the person, Elizabeth II. But I do not really respect the institution. It’s elitist and obsolete. But they are British. So they are free to do what they want.

It’s not “monarchy” that we mourn but rather how Queen Elizabeth II used it. She was a symbol of unity and continuity not just as Head of State of our strongest allies, but was a steady rock and symbol of Western civilization as whole. She is that constant that is now gone. Even if King Charles III serves admirably and preserves the institution of the monarchy, I don’t see him fulfilling this same role as his mother.
Charles has a history of arrogance and entitlement thus he hasn’t been well liked by many. I should think in his 70’s now he’s mellowed that to some degree. But even if so he so often comes across as a dimwit!
