Democrats scramble to protect federal workers ahead of midterms, possible Trump return in 2024

Trump has only hinted at the possibility of running again in 2024, and it is unclear whether he will mount a successful comeback two years from now. But for House Democrats, the writing on the wall is a bit clearer – polls consistently show Republicans are likely to take back control of the House during the midterms. According to Fox News power rankings, Republicans are expected to win the House this November but on a slimmer margin than previously forecast, while neither party can yet claim a majority in the Senate.

That means Democrats may have just a few months left before the midterm elections to shape policy as they see fit, and one of their priorities is protecting federal workers from actions that a potentially re-elected Trump, or other Republican, would likely take.

Just before Trump left office, he signed an executive order setting up a new classification of federal workers known as Schedule F. The order instructed federal agencies to place thousands of workers into this category, which would strip them of the due process rights afforded to most federal workers and make it easier for them to be fired. For the Trump camp, it was a last-ditch effort to "drain the swamp" of officials who resisted his policy prescriptions. But Democrats saw it as a political attack against the government’s merit-based civilian workforce system that has been in place for 150 years, and a return to the patronage or "spoils" system of managing the federal workforce.

President Biden rescinded Trump’s order, but in possible preparation for another run at the White House, Trump said in March he wanted to make "every executive-branch employee fireable by the president."

Writer seems as if the argument for them rather than just referring to it. Anyways, cutting the flab will make room for true merit where it's needed, and just lop it off where it's not.

As I have already posted many times, the Federal agencies are running the country, literally.

Anybody still think we’re a free country - or that a deep state doesn’t exist?

Government needs to adopt the same rules that apply to most corporations. Nobody should have protections from being fired, if they deserve to be fired.

When Trump wins in 2024 he needs to drop all subtlety, swing for the fences and fire as many people as he possibly can. The goal should be to fire too many and then say “Whoops. Guess I have to hire a couple of them back.” The pendulum needs to swing too far. That’s how you know you’re doing it right.

so they got rid of the spoils system which gave power to the elected officials

and got an unelected entrenched bureaucracy that can work against the elected officials

which one is more like democracy?

talk about a threat to the republic

Executive orders can be rescinded, but orders to rescind can also be rescinded and new orders implemented.

And, no order from congress should force new administrations to accept employees who are hostile to their new employer(s). Employees who are hostile and refuse to assist their new employer or boss, should be able to be fired. Besides. 'you're fired!' is Trump's favorite phrase. ;) He should be able to use that phrase when applicable.

To be fair I don’t think the problem, and I could be wrong, is the average entry level government worker. The problem is the FBI CIA and NSA.

Eliminate entire departments. Don’t think of them as real people.

Merit my rear.

How is it merit when they can’t be fired? This is absurd.

Yes, where is the meme “that word does not mean what you think it means”.

Their concept of “merit-based” means of the correct political view or correct pander group.

Some special protected classes of people can’t be fired without immediate legal retaliation that is often too costly to fight, so they effectively can’t be fired. Even in the corporate world.
